Bill,

Make sure your bore is a .323" versus .318"! (Liability Clause).

I tend to the heavier weights in the 8x57JS Mauser in .323" bullets.

RWS brass (prepped & trimmed with a Lee Cutter)
WLR Primer
Speer 200 grain SP
46.0 grains of VV N-140
O.A.L. 3.20"

Mild enough and a good game load.

Cheers,

Number 10

Cartridge: 8x57JS
Firearm: Remington Model 700 Classic
Barrel Length: 24"
Bullet: 220 gr Woodleigh round nose
Powder: IMR-4350
Powder Charge: 51.0 grs
Case Make: W-W
Primer: WLR (standard primer)
C.O.L.: 3.14"

Chrono Summary - 10 shots
Average Velocity: 2,402 fps
Average Energy: 2,819 ft lb
High Velocity: 2,428 fps
Low Velocity: 2,392 fps
Extreme Spread: 36 fps
Standard Deviation: 10 fps

By the way, this load knocks the snot out of Warthogs!! Big Grin

Usual caveats apply about reducing powder charges and working back up. This load appears to be safe in my rifle. The primer edges are round (like a new primer) after firing. As a reference, Sellier & Bellot lists a factory load for the 8x57JS with a 220 gr Sierra SBT at a listed 2454 fps (748 m/s) from a 23.6" (60 cm) barrel. See: http://www.sellier-bellot.cz/

Thanks for the replies, guys. The Mauser was reworked in 1947 or later and seems to have a virtually mint bore. I like the heavier slugs, too.

An article from Rifle Shooter magazine about the Rem 700 Classic in 8x57 with some load data listed.

Remington's 8x57 Classic
http://www.rifleshootermag.com/featured_rifles/classic_062804/
Note that the load data and velocity results listed in the load table are from a "MODEL 98 MAUSER CALIBER 8x57JS, 29-in. BARREL".

From the article:
"Chamber-throat length also has its influence on velocity. A few years back I worked with a fine old Mauser sporting rifle. While it had been built at the Oberndorf factory during the 1920s, its bore was still in mint condition. The barrel of that rifle was 23 1/2 inches long, and yet, due to its shorter chamber throat, it delivered velocities as high as and sometimes even higher than those clocked with a 29-inch military barrel with its longer throat."

A load that shoots very accurately (sub MOA) in my 24/47 and numerous other M98 8mms is the Sierra 175 gr GK over 49 gr of H4895 in W-W cases and WLR primers. This is a top end load so work up. It runs 2640 to 2650 fps out of the 24/47 and most other similar M98s.

I'll buck the trend here. My favorite close range deer load (sub 150 yds) is 30 grains of IMR4198 and the Hornady 150. Roughly 2250 fps. Flattens whitetails (took a big-bodied 130 class last fall with this load). Low noise, very mild recoil, and extremely good accruacy.

In my scoped Turk I'm using 150g Hornady and 53.5g H4350. This is not a max load, and I've seen quotes on the net (for what its worth) of much stiffer charges.

In my open sighted 24/47 I shoot Turk surplus or reduced loads. 16g Blue Dot and Hornady 150g Hit dead on at 50 yards with the 500 meter sight setting. I haven't shot that load farther, since I can't shoot those sights well at longer range.

I love my 24/47. It has a new, pretty stock and the bore and metal finish are pristine. I think I mat be the first person to shoot with this barrel. $129 at Dunhams.

My iron sighted M48 will do 1 1/2 MOA with Remington's 185 grain bullet and 49.5gr of IMR 4895. This load chronographed just shy of 2600 FPS. My Husqvarna will shoot this loads MOA, but the sights are not regulated properly. I will try this load again substuting Hornady's #3236 195 grain bullet to see if I can fix the sight problem.

A couple of months ago, Handloader Magazine had an article on reloading 8x57. They found several loads with 195-200 gr bullets were best. Interestingly, they noted the Hornady factory fodder, with 195 gr spitzer at 2475 fps, was within a hair of his best handload. I got several boxes of it at ~$16/box, and it shoots really well. Ballistics are almost identical to S&B spce ammo, but the Hornady is more accurate in my sporterized 98k. I've bought the dies, and prepped some brass, but haven't reloaded for it yet.

Depending on what ya want out of it...

25 grains of SR 4759... and a 170 grain Speer, does wonders....

pump it up to 35 grains, with the bullet seated to magazine length... and it competes with the slower powder loads.. work up as always....

for a screamer...

RL 7, work up from about 44 grains... I seem to get reliable pressures up to about 48 grains, but YOU ARE DEFINITELY getting into higher pressures in this arena above 44 grains....

Doesn't seem to phase my CZs or Mauser ( German) 1933 production or my Turkish Mauser 1945 production....

Work up the RL 7 loads but it will really be eye popping over the chronograph... INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY ON THAT RECOMMENDATION!

Thanks again guys for the added info. I'm kind of fond of the heavier slugs myself. I even have a partial box of mystery softpoints that weigh 237 grains. Also have some of the Sierra 220 boattails to fool with.

My 24/47 shoots this load into right at 1" at 100 yds. So does my M48 and a few others.

I've posted the exact load on AR before and since I am not with my notes I'll refrain form posting the charge weight now. But I use AA2230C and a Rem 185 gr Corelokt.
