My rifle loves 150 grain Nosler Accubonds with
IMR 8208 XBR. Bullets seated 6 thousands off the lands.

Try Varget and 150 or 165 grain bullets. Imr 8208 XBR was accurate but not as much velocity.

Bob, the .308 is usually easy to load for, with many great combinations.

I would start with a 150gr Nosler Ballistic tips and some W748, or H4895. BLc-2 Varget, and H335 are all great choices as well.

My rem 700 shoots well with 150 grain Hornady BTSP & Reloader 15. Book COAL and 46 grains gets me about 2750 FPS and sub MOA groups. It shoots many loads well - easy gun & caliber to find a good load for.

Knowing what the use will be would be nice (hunting [hunting what], general practice, target shooting, etc.)?

150 gr sp with 43.5 g IMR4350 is a nice slow accurate load.
150 g with 38 g of H322 seems ok too.

Varget and or RL15 have worked very well for me in a multitude of 308's. One of the easier rounds to load for. Just seems to like so many different powders ansd bullets.

i use one 308 jaxketed bullet load
42 grs of 4895 [usually imr] cci lr primers, and the hornady 150 interlock.
yep a plain old school generic load.
it works in everything though, m-14,model 100 win, bolt gun, whatever and is accurate.
if for general hole making, rock shooting,i swap out for the winchester 147 fmjbt and apply a light crimp.
the two shoot close enough together to swap back and forth for hunting and practice.

The only 308 I have is a TC encore pistol and it likes IMR 4064 max. and 150 ssts. Under a 1in. at 100. About as good as I can do with a pistol. Actually I was really surprised they were that tight. Tried varget they spread to 3in.

You can get real satisfactory loads with a plethora of different powders in most 308's. I like Rlr-15 most of the time.

Lots of other good ones mentioned, Varget, 4895, Blc2 and 4064 aint too shabby..

There are probably more good reloads for the 308 than ANY other calibre.

However the first load I ever used, given to me by a friend in 1975 has worked so good, I have never seen any reason to change. In fact I killed a deer, a turkey and 2 pigs with it just last deer season.
I call it THE 308/7.62mm load, as it works geat in any of these rifles I have shot it in.

Powder, 39.5gr of IMR 3031.
Bullet the 165 Sierra HPBT Gameking.
It also shoots just as good with the following bullets, I use them all interchangeably.
The Sierra 165gr Spz, 165 Nosler Partiton, 165 Nosler Solid base, [no longer made], 165 Nosler Ballistic Tip, and of course the 168 Sierra Matchking.

I have been reloading for over 30 years and do not reload for others, nor will I shoot any ammo reloaded by somebody other than me.

I read your post where you stated you are new to reloading. The subject line in this this thread refers to reloading for your friend's 308.

Here is a nickle's worth of free advice. I would be very cautious about reloading for a friend, especially when you are just starting out.

BTW I like Varget in a 308 bolt gun with 155 to 175 grain bullets. Sierra MK for targets and Sierra GK will do fine for deer.

The 308 was designed using IMR 4895 as a propellant, you cannot go wrong with AA2495 (a copy of IMR 4895) or H4895 with bullets up to 175 grain.

I have buds who use IMR 4064, that powder shoots great but the sticks are so long you have to weigh charges. I tried AA4064, a short grained 4064, the stuff is very accurate but I could not push bullets as fast as IMR 4064.

I have tested Varget and it may be the best overall powder in 308, but I have several kegs to go through before I can make that claim with any certainty.

Till then, IMR 4895/H4895/AA2495 are pretty hard to beat in this cartridge.

I got great accuracy with 168 Horn. hpbt and 40-41gr of AR-Comp. Did well in M1a, Savage 99 and Win 100.
