Hey guys, I'm new to the forums here and tried a search for the info I was looking for and wasn't able to come up with anything. So, here goes: I managed to luck my way into a Remington 700 in 264 Win Mag at an amazing price ($200!!) as well as 4 lbs. of Reloder 33 (Free!!) I was wondering if anyone could offer a starting point for RL 33 and 120gr TTSXs/123gr Scenars in the 264 Win Mag. I can't seem to find any published data for this powder, with these bullets, in this caliber. If my scheme is totally harebrained, please feel free to let me know. Thanks, Matt

Welcome. Factory 700? 24" barrel? No experience with RL33 but QL does list it as one of the top 4 powder choices for your 120s As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Thanks! And yes, it is a factory 24 inch barrel. Based on my research, it has a 1:9 twist.

Re33 is very much on the slower spectrum, I'd expect it to work better on the 140 gr class of projectiles, but I could certainly be wrong on that. If I was looking for max speed on 120 class bullets, I'd look at a touch faster powder. Shoot straight, shoot often. Matt

Try Alliant's website. They have load data for free.

There is a death of reloading data for the .264 Winchester. Even Alliant doesn't list any loading for R33 in their loading manual.!!! That Winchester case is an offshoot of the old .375 H&H magnum and back in the 50'-60's Winchester developed 3 or 4 cartridges using the base belted magnum case necked up or down. R33 is a fairly new development introduced back around 2013. It is actually intended for the larger calibers of that same base case. You are pretty well stuck with obtaining your load data from the Quick Load software. Unfortunately they do not list the bullets you specify but they do have two 120 grain #1. NECO DaVinci. It's a lead core, copper clad match bullet. #2. Nosler ballistic tip, lead core, copper clad hunting bullet. The .264 Winchester Magnum is a reputed barrel burner. Quick Load calculations show: 77 grains R33, Neco DaVinci 120 grain, 3227 fps, 54,281 psi. 77 grains R33, 120 grain Nosler ballistic tip 26120, 3170 fps, 51,712 psi. .264 case capacity is 82 grains and your rifles max psi is 64,000. Quick Load shows some amazing differences in pressures in the same caliber, same grain weight just switching from a lead bullet to a lead core/copper clad to a copper solid. Pure lead has a Brinell hardness of around 5.5. By adding tin and antimony the hardness can increase up to 22, 23. Solid copper is up around 35 Brinell. The bullets you specify are fairly close in construction to those in QL, lead core/copper clad. So there is not to be expected any bothersome pressure spike. You should be on safe ground with a starting load of 77 grains. You're way up there in velocity 3200 fps and your pressures are reasonable. I wouldn't push the envelope to milk more out. It will just burn out your barrel sooner. You can always look for the signs of pressure, flattened primer, swelled case head, hard extraction, difficult full length resizing. You should do just fine with R33. But I'll say that I use IMR 4350 in my Winchester magnums and it is absolute tops in performance and accuracy.

I've been using Win 780 in mine since I can no longer find H870. Barrel burner talk is nonsense. All barrels will eventually wear out. Took me almost 50 years to wear out the barrel in my 264. I'm interested in Re33 though. Anybody with actual experience shooting this powder in a 264, please chime in. IMR 4350 in the .264 Winchester is like using pistol powder. Expand that same case's neck up to .338 and the 4350 is about the right burning rate. I'd be interested in seeing some verified results using RL-33 in the .264. It should be about the right burning rate for it.

It sure would have been nice for me for Winchester- Hodgdon to keep making the excellent 780 powder.

I have loaded R33 with 127 Barnes and 129 Interbonds from Hornady. These were used in a tight chambered Lilja 27" barrel. 127 Barnes 215 primers Nosler brass 70 gr. 3314 fps 71 gr. 3360 fps Max in rifle 129 Horn IB 215 Nosler brass 71 gr. 3267 fps 72 gr. 3306 fps 73 gr. 3339 fps borderline hot. 72 gr. in WW case 215 primer 129 IB did 5 shots into just under an inch. In a fac M70 1990 version 24 barrel I worked from 72 to 78 gr R33. FPS went from 2866 to 3155 with no pressure signs. R/P cases Fed 215 primers. No two rifles are the same so work up carefully. Hope this helps.
