I like H-380 with bullets from 50-55gr. With heavier ones, I've had good luck with H-414. However, a buddy swears by Re15.

I agree with RL 15. It has been my main powder for the 22/250 until recently. I tried some RL7 with the 40 grainers out of the older Lyman Manual ( #47). It really surprised me with both velocity and accuracy, tried it in both of my 22/250s with same results. Also then tried it with 45, 50 and 55 grain bullets and got the same results. So now it is my new " main squeeze" in my 22/250s and RL15 is my back up powder. ( A quicker plug also for IMR 4895, 4064, and W 748 when I am out of RL and the store is not open)

I am not so sure that there is a "best" powder for the 22-250 Remington. The cartridge is so flexible that a lot of propellants work just fine. My all time favorite, though, has to be H 4895. I have found very few 22-250 rifles that will not shoot well with that powder. However, my most recent custom rifle for this caliber shoots best with either Varget or N 140. But this has proven to be a very finicky barrel that needs just the right load to perform well. I have some friends who swear by RL 15, but I have never tried it. Oddly enough, I cannot think of anyone that I shoot with that uses H 380. R F

There is no "best" powder for a given cartridge! And that is an absolute fact! There are just too many variables to say that such-and-such powder is the ONLY powder for such-and-such caliber. I have three .22-250's, and they all like something different. One likes H-380 and the Sierra 52 HPBT, another likes H-414 and the Sierra 55 SBT, and the third one likes IMR-3031 and the Hornady 53 grain HP. IMR4895 does work well in the .22-250. One of my better loads consists of 35.5gr. with the 55 grain Sierra. This year, I want to experiment with different powders(Varget,H414,760,748). I am not unhappy with prior results, I just think the other powders might offer more. Most of my loads were developed years ago in an old M77, I carried them over to the new M700 where they have worked well. I've also noticed the 700 is a little more sensitive on the top end, whereas the 77 would take from .3 to 1.0 grains more powder. With the new powders out now, like Varget, V-V, and the reloader series, I think I've got more work to do. packrat

One of the beauties of the .22-250Rem is that it will accomodate a whole host of different powders. I like IMR4064 and Varget, but the powders listed in the earlier responses are also quite good, producing top accuracy. You'll just have to determine which your rifle will digest. Best wishes. I use H380 with good results and I use IMR 4350 with good results also. Reloader 10 which is new is meant for the 22-250. I haven't reloaded it anything yet with it. If anyone has, please comment

The best I found was Vit N140. In all weights from 52-63 grain. I obtained 1/2MOA at 200Yards. Cheers Rob T.

I've had very good accuracy out of my 22-250 with 36 grains of varget and 52 grain a-max hornady ballistic tips, or 38 grains of varget with 40 grain nosler ballistic tip or hornady v-max 40 grain moly, hope this helps.

I read h380 was developed for the 22-.250. 38 grains with any 50- 55 grain bullet. I have imr4064, and 8lbs of varget. I will try these first before I buy another powder. thanks for replies and info. wayne

I have been using AA2015BR. Clean burning and accurate with the 50-55 grain bullets in my XP!

quote:Well, not quite. H-380 was a surplus powder (manufactured to approximately WC 852 specs) that Bruce Hodgdon bought for redistribution. He found that 38 grains in the then-wildcat .22-250 he owned performed very, very well. As a result, he named the powder for the weight he used (38.0 grains). Most loading manuals do not currently recommend as much as 38 grains of H-380 (with a bullet as heavy as 55 grains), so if you attempt to duplicate it, work up carefully; but it is safe in many guns. As others have mentioned, H-4895 or IMR 4895 at 35.5 grains behind a 55 grain bullet is a recipe that many .22-250 shooters have arrived at independently and is a good performer in most rifles. But then the .22-250 does well with a large range of medium to medium-slow burning powders; you'll just have to "hit the sweet spot" with your own rifle.

Mr308win, If you prowl the manuals H380 does seem the powder of choice for the 22-250 but as we don't get that in Oz I have used 34-35 gn of Varget or as we call it here AR2208 with Sierra 52gn HPBT for great accuracy. I have tried Benchmark (or BM2 here) but that does not seem to suit my rifle. I have also had very good results with 34.5gn of W748 & Sierra 52gn HPBT.
