For hunting I use WLR or Fed, the CCIs can hang-or-mis-fire in cold weather. I think the cup is harder on the CCIs. I think it's all in what brand bit you last...

I use CCI BR-2 primers for target shooting in all my guns up to 7mm Rem mag and have had very good results. As far as hangfires I have not had any last week was 10 degrees F and the 22-250 and the 7mag went 100rds without a problem. Not disputing Dons findings just my own. In all truth accurracy difference between Win Lg rifle and CCI BR-2 is very minimal if any.

Reloader 1,

To each his own. I absolutely believe your had no problems with CCI. Saeed has (or had) some primer tests in the FAQs on accuratereloading.com that also showed problems with CCIs in cold weather. I think the real problem is harder cups on the CCIs.

So it's entirely possible to have a rifle with a firing pin that reliably sets off Feds or WLR, but is marginal on the CCIs. Then when the bolt gets cold the firing pin may drag, causing a dented primer but no ignition. This problem is obviously aggravated by excessive or improper firing pin lube.

Note that in Saeed's test the ammo was cold, but not the rifle, so a dragging pin was not the issue there.

Extensive experience in "match" pistols with lightened springs shows that the CCI pistol primers are significantly harder to light off than the Feds.

For me, all this boils down to using Fed or WLR, as I don't want to hear a click on a once in a lifetime hunt!

I just used up the last of 3000 rounds of 308 that I loaded in 1975 using CCI primers. I never had a misfire with any of them, and shot a couple of hundred last winter on a zero degree day.

But I wouldn't have risked an elk hunt on one of them.

I use the ccibr2 in several loads from .222 to 30/06. The only problem I had with them was with Military brass in my 06, the primers would crush , I ended up using Rimington primers for the Mil. brass. In my .270 win. With a 140gr spire pt. and a load of IMr 4064 br2 primers, fairly cold
temps 15 deg or so I have not had any problems but I may only shoot 1 or 2 time at the most for deer.

Don I agree totally with you. The CCI primers I use are for paper use only not hunting. When loading for hunting I use Win lg rifle or Federal 215s and truthfully really cannot see much accurracy difference.( but I don't shoot a Stolle ..... yet)
