What is the proper method for measuring group size?

Frasier, You may take a caliper (digital or analog) and measure the outside furthest points. Subtract the caliber and that reading is the grouping. To wit: G = F - c Example: At 100 yds with a 30-06 one shoots a group of 5 shots. The furthest point measures 1.25 inches. Your grouping therefore yields 0.942 inches. Center to center of the furthest apart bullet holes is a little simpler way of saying it. ------------------

Alex- Your formula does indeed give you center-to-center. Your way of measuring is also correct. Ever try to find the "center" of a hole?

I just read steves pages [url above], and I learned something: There are more meaningful ways to measure a group than the maximum spread.

That is correct and that is the benchrest rules of measure. Measure the two furtherest outside distances and subtract the caliber or use Rays method measure the two outside distances and divide by two, it'll make you feel good about your gun and after all thats whats important, whats in a silly millimeter..... ------------------
