1894mk2358 winchester 200gr
I keep on having this strange desire for a 358 winchester even though most of my hunting would be better served by a 308.
What is the realistic velocity for 200gr bullets in a 22" 358?

jeffeossofactory load is 200gr at 2500 fps .. classic load, from the old winchester loading manual that they used to give away free
but you can also use this tool
http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/riflei have always preferred 225gr gamekings loaded pretty stiff, in my 358s .. just the best all around useful load for me...
oh, yeah, and 125gr 357 bullets at lightspeed turns varmits into pink rain
btw, h335 / TAC are THE powder for anything in 308 cases, if you want great returns on weight

jeffeossowow, what a nice BLR..
funny story -- the first rifle i built, from an action, was a 358 -- and i had to order a 10 twist from douglas, as I wanted to shoot barnes x 225 and certainly wanted more than enough twist ... and then they stopped, for a time, making that bullet ... so wound up using the GK 225 ... it's killed many hogs and deer!

4sixteenHandloaded it fires 158gr 38 caliber (0.357") projectiles with good accuracy for plinking or varmints.

HipshootI get
2597 avg. with IMR 3031 and 200 gr. Hornady SPR.
2532 avg. with WW 738 and 225 gr. Sierra
2425 avg. with WW748 and 250 gr. Speer SPR.
Rifle is a custom with 22" Douglas BBL.

AtkinsonI suffered that malady some many years ago, shot some Mule deer and whitetail, and one elk with the Savage 99 in .358...It was a short range caliber or so its said but it killed no better at short range than my .308, and the .308 was better across those big wide Southern canyons in the Big Bend country of far West Texas...

jeffeosso225 gr gamekings at 2500 have about the same ballistics as a 165 308 at 2650 .. i think the vertical is about 1.5 @ 350yards difference .. that's an IDC .. but the "wind bucking" difference is HUGE ...
i never complained about longish shots from a 358, with proper bullets .... i did take the head off a squirrel at EXACTLY 200 yards, as he kept running over the top of the targets at the range .. range master asked "can you hit him" ...BANG .. yeah, i think so
