Found a note on Leslie Edelman stationary from Pop. It's prices for some shotgun reloading supplies dated July 1977 :-)

CCI 209 primers - 7.99/1000 now 30/1000 - %400
25# Lawrence #8 shot - 9.96 now 50 - %500
700x assume 4# - 19.60 now 70 - %350

I think 97* was powder but I'm not sure.

I brought a lot of supplies back the other the shot price they seem about right.

The shot price seems high I brought shot cheaper then that even later on.

I remember recycled shot was about half price.

97* was a Remington primer that is smaller than a 209. They have long been extinct. Most people that reloaded back then just forced a 209 primer in place of the 97*.

No, the 97* was a "209-sized" primer for Remington target shells. The "Remington-sized" primer (used in Remington's non-target loads) was the smaller 57. CCI's "Remington-sized" primer was a "157".

You might be surprised to see that the prices have hardly changed at all between 1977 and 2013. If you'll go to http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/ and put these prices into the calculator there to convert 1977 dollars into 2013 dollars using the Consumer Price Index, you'll get the following:

Primers at $7.99 = $30.66 today
Shot at $9.96 = $38.22 today
Powder at $19.60 = $75.21 today

I suspect that whenever the current ammunition/component frenzy ceases that you can buy any of these for 1977-equivalent prices or less.

But what is really surprising is how much certain shooting items have fallen in price. Check out a Leupold 3-9 Vari-X II, which was $73.15 in the 1972 Leslie Edleman catalog I have. That equals $418, but you can buy essentially the same scope today (the arguably better VX-I) for about half that price.

Besides that, I've got the money in my pocket today, but didn't in 1977.
