Just bought a Blackhawk in .45 Colt. Reading various articles and forums the "Keith type" bullet gets a lot of mention. As much as I can tell it is a popular cast bullet. I've seen moulds for sale to cast but not any Keith type bullets for sale. My question: What is the "Keith type" of bullet and what is the history behind it that makes it so unique?

Thanks

A Keith bullet had; A flat point, a forward section sized to ride the lands, and a full bore size rear portion. They were hard cast lead.
If you haven't read Keiths stuff, I envy yoy
you have a lot of good reading ahead.
Good Luck!

My circa 1969 Ruger Blackhawk in 45 Colt has alway done well with the Saeco 250 gr bullet. That particular bullet has a very wide meplat and it's effect on small game is impressive.

I cast them using linotype which results in a very hard bullet. The Keith design is an outstanding one.

I belive more people are going to WFN bullet over the keith type now for hunting.

I shot a 310gr lee WFN and have had great results with them.

Nothing wroung with the keith types but they do not come in the real heavy weights.

The big game hunting were I used my .45 was just too hard for a handgun. I used it most with that bullet and 9.5 grs of Unique for 1000 fps. That is a most satisfactory load thats fun to shoot over and over.

hawkins gave you a good description. You can buy 240gr LSWC just about anywhere. They are a copy of sorta to the Keith design. RCBS makes a Keith mold in several diff. weights. If you don't cast, there are several custom casters that make them. Many hunters are using LFP for the heavier bullets, 275gr & up. The Keith is a longer OAL bullet for weight.
