Making 240 Weatherby brass from 25-06 brass
I read about this on another forum.....I've never tried it so I'm looking for someone with any experience at all with this.

Seems it'd take some major pressure and darn good lube!.....I have an action to screw a 240 barrel to if this can be done...

Didn't Fossdal do it when he was building his wildcat on the 240 case? At least tried to form the rim.

As usual just my $.02

Vapodog I have made 240 Wby cases from 25-06 Win cases. Use only new brass. Lube the case and run it through the full length size die.If memory serves me correct I ran the case partway into the size die withdrew it then completed the sizing on the second downstroke. I have some of these cases that have been loaded 5 or 6 times and they are still going strong. Hope that helps.

The 240Wby case is belted mag and headspace is on the belt not the shoulders

You can go to SAAMI.com and get chamber print on the 240Wby

Vapordog try this:

One guy shows pictures of the cases he formed and goes on to showing sectioned cases to prove they aren't weakened in anyway. According to him you arn't forming a belt on the 06 class of cases, you're sizing the body down as the 240 is smaller and leaving a belt which was the original head of the 06 class cases. He also says 280 Rem cases are the better to size down.

Tom,
its saami.org. yes, you CAN headspace off the belt, and only a fool would do so, if scraping a belt into 30-06 cases...

like MOST belted cases, they CAN be headspaced off the shoulder (300hh, not so much)...

manson will make you a shoulder headspace gage for it.

no less an authority than PO Ackley created my opinion on the matter

How we each do our custom will vary for safety sometimes it's good to refer back to SAAMI.

Myself when I have a Wby build I don't have the Wby freebore and headspace is on the shoulders same as I have that done on my standard belt mag calibers.

Darn right.....I learned the hard way that when one is making a custom rifle for a standard cartridge he might be well advised to use a standard headspace gauge for the chambering....It's ok to use a case from one's FL resizing die as a headspace gauge but then he actually does not have a standard chamber and will eventually cause problems when someone in the future tries to feed it standard factory ammo

Jeff,

When sizing those 06 cases to the 240 W it's not scraping a belt on them. The body of the 240 is smaller in diameter so it sizes the body ahead of the solid web/head down and that leaves that web/head area as a belt. Grant you that there are some dies out there that actually do scrape the barrel.

About head spacing on the belts of belted cases I've always head spaced off the shoulders because there are more inconsistencies in the specifications of the belts on cases and sometimes in the chambers. That way I wouldn't have to worry about a head separation. At least don't size the shoulder back too much. This doesn't apply to cartridges like you mentioned the 300 H&H and others.

Old wives tale on the .300 H&H. I have only a Lee Collet die for sizing mine, and from the appearance of the primer on the second shot with the same load, the headspace has been reduced to zero by headspacing on the shoulder. When you load the old H&H with a collet die, there's no creeping case length growth, either.

If I were considering a .240 WBY, I believe I would soon discard the thought and simply go with a 6mm/06 -- slightly more case capacity and much less hassle.

Basically what you done with the collet die is necked sized it. After that initial firing your entire case fits the chamber like a glove. I see your point though. You didn't full length resize it and the results were very good.

My opinion is the 6mm/06 is a little too much. Why not just go to a 6.5-06?
