Calibor ideas for a Dakota Model 10? Thinking of doing a Dakota M10 for plinking, varmints and small to medium game. Basically an all around fun type little rifle. I want to keep the power level modest since it will be such a light little gun. No scope, peep sight only, with thin 26" barrel, used out to around 150 yrds. Rimmed cartridge only (just because) . I am thinking along the lines of .357 mag or 30-30 power wise. I have seen loads listed for the .357 mag in a rifle for a 150-160gn cast bullet @ 1900-2100fps. is that realistic? Allen It's a Mauser thing, you wouldn't understand.

I have a Model 10, but in 35 Whelen AI 357 pistol seems a bit limited for this action...that might be better suited to a minature Farquason (which has been done). I would vote either 243 Win, or 257 Roberts. You could shoot anything up to and including deer with those. Garrett

+1 on the 257 Roberts, I think it would be perfect for the requirements you listed. I have a Model 10 in 7 Dakota and I thought it was the ideal caliber in a Model 10 but if I built another one it would be a Bob.............................DJ ....Remember that this is all supposed to be for fun!..................
