A pretty soft bullet, but if you slow it down it works great..but keep in mind its hard to have "total" bullet failure with a .375 caliber and 225 grs. of anything... 225 grs. of soup would probably kill a deer...

In other words it kills game well enough with lots of bloodshot meat ruined, and recovered bullets are hard to come by and they are normally not perfect mushrooms, but parts of the bullet...If any of this matters to you.

hi Ray
if i load them@2400-2500 fps would it work without ruining a lot of venison at that reduced velocity?

Lonnie Hummel of Hornady says the jacket of the .375" Hornady 225 grain spire point is the same thickness as the .375" Hornady 270 grain spire point from the shank through the ogive to the tip. Hardly a soft bullet. My experience shooting deer, black bear and hogs with them indicate to me that they are well suited to hunting those animals driven 2800 fps. No devastating meat damage that I have witnessed.

Here is my load:
.375 H&H Magnum
225 grain Hornady spire point seated to 3.6" and crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp Die
Remington brass
CCI 250 primer
67 grains H4895 START
70 grains H4895 my hunting load
74.8 grains H4895 MAXIMUM

I loaded a couple batches of that bullet while I owned my 375. I was looking for a deer load. At full speed I'd rather shoot heavy bullets. In the ~2400 fps range they shot well and didn't punish.

Another load I just worked up that I will try this fall :
.375 H&H Magnum, 24" barrel
225 grain Hornady spire point seated to 3.6" and crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp Die
Remington brass
CCI 250 primer
80 grains BL-C(2) START 2878 fps
85 grains BL-C(2) MAXIMUM 3000 fps 1.1" five-shot 100 yard group
Has a similar trajectory as a 30-06 with a 150 grain bullet.
