Hy, I am trying to find a good recipe for my .243 win. I had some RL.22 powder kick'n around and thought i would try that, Very poor result's. This is the recipe i used, 45.5 gr. of RL.22, 85gr. Sierra HPBT, 9.5 Rem. primer, mv 2902. There seem's to be something really wrong with the MV., the lyman book call's for 3250 fps.I then fired some 100 gr. super x factory load's through the crony and got 2888fps. Any sugestion's on different powder's for this 85 gr. bullet. Any info would be appreciated, thank's: Rick.

In my .243W I've found H4831SC to be better than any of the 4350s.

The guys have recommended the right powders above.
If velocity is bugging you you may be disappointed. The 243 just does not go a fast a lot of the books suggest.
Load them until the primers are really mashed flat and the trajectory is always about like a 30-06 when you expect it to be like a .270.

Every .243 I have had; maybe a dozen or so, have shot great with a maximum charge of IMR 4350 and Federal match primers. I use Barnes 85 gr. TXS, and a 68 gr. Berger. Under 1/2" with both, from a wimpy barreled Kimber M84, that is very finiky.

I worked down a load*

100 gr. HNDY RN moly jammed into the lands 2.725" 24" barrel, H4350, 1903 Turk Mauser, standard reamer, A&B barrel:
a) 45 gr extractor groove growth .001"
b) 44 gr third firing caused .001" growth
c) 43 gr no growth on 6 firings, measures 2969 -2982 fps

What does it all mean?
I am not getting 3250 fps with that bullet, powder, and gun, unless I want to throw the case away after each shot.

4831SC----Also a good choice.

One powder that works very well that you just don't read or hear much about anymore is AA3100. This powder with the 90+ gr bullets works very well also and it is typically on the cheap side.

I've never been impressed with the 243 velocities or trajectories in common bbl lengths.

Mid-weight bullets in a 243 respond well to Varget and 4064. Heavier bullets do beter with 4350/4831.

I have had good results (velocity and accuracy both) in the 243 using H450 (no longer available), H4831 and IMR4831. My experience is that each rifle will have it's own preferences and experimentation will be necessary.

Thank's guy's, I have been searching other site's also, and seeing i have a 1/2 a jug of H-4350, i'll give that a try. It is like Sagebrush say's , got to find that sweet load. I know it took me a bit to find a real good load for my 300 RUM. The old coyote's will have to deal with the 100 gr. factory load's for now.Again, Thank's:Rick. p.s. Happy Newyear.

My Ruger .243 just loves Varget with about any weight and type of bullet I've tried.

I once had a Winchester 88 in .243 that would flatten and pierce primers, expand pockets, and otherwise show big pressure signs with any 100-grain bullet, even factory loads. My guess is that the throat was tight.

It was a tack driver (3/8 to 1/2 MOA) and shot great with 70 and 80 grain bullets, no pressure signs at all even with max charges of 4831.

Some guns are just slower than others and some give higher pressures than others. Every rifle's a bit unique.

IMO you could try to work up that load; according to Quickload 3.3, the RL22 seems to be a quite good choice, the max. load should be 48 gr. with a V/0 of 3175 fps out of a 24" barrel, though. Of course it's only a guess.

If 4350, Varget, H-414 and RE-22 don't work, try RE-19.

I use a warm load of 40.5 grains behind the 100 partition for 2,954 fps. Smiler
