Just got a new Savage 12FV, it's got a 1:9 twist. Looking for a coyote load that will shoot under .5" at 100 yards. Any ideas of where to start?

Brian so far AA 2015 has been pretty consistant in my FV12 with 40 Gr. V-max's. But I'm looking to go up to a heavier bullet. 55 Gr. Blitz (not Blitzking) by Sierra is where I'm headed.

So far the best I've got is IMR 4198 with the 40 gr. V-max's. They are going about 3650. Anyone have any ideas on how to get one going any quicker?

N133 will give you a hair more. After that you better start thinking .204, 22-250 or .220 Swift.

I have used the 55gr. Sierra Game King #1365 and 21 to 22 gr. of IMR4198, WW Brass and CCBR primer. I have heard the Hornady 52 gr. A-max also works on coyotes but I can't personally attest to that. I have tested its accuracy though and using the same load above it shot very well through one FV and several other 223s. I don't think you will have much trouble finding a load to shoot under half inch. Jim Please be an ethical PD hunter, always practice shoot and release!! Brian: Nosler's 5th edition manual shows 23.o gr. H335 behind a 55 gr. Bal. Tip @ 2987 fps to a Maximum of 25.0 gr (listed as most accurate load/powder tested by Nosler) @ 3140 fps. I don't believe in pushing the envelope, but carefully worked up to 25.6 gr. in my FP10 using Winchester cases, CCI SR primers and measured 3300 fps 15' from muzzle. Getting .5 moa @ 100 yds. I am not getting any pressure signs in my rifle, but YMMV. Every coyote shot with this load has been DRT! 75grain Hornady AMAX with 23.5 grains of TAC. You're good to go.

I have followed Seafire's recipe for the .223 with 27.0 grains of Reloader 7 with a 40 grain BT that has produced 3925 fps out of a 24 inch tube with good accruacy and death on coyotes and badgers. And I think that badgers are a little tougher to take down than the coyotes. My son shot a badger with this load at about 200-225 yards that was a very large male and it folded him immediately with one shot. You will need to work up the best load in your rifle and as you know all rifles are different.

I think the man from Con rogergress has the right bullet and weight. With my 12VBSS-S (.223) I get 3050fps, out of the Hornady 75 gr. bthp, driven by 26.5gr. WCC 846 (similar to BL-C-2) CCI mag primer, 4 shot 1/4" grp. 50 yds.and almost identical performance with 25gr A2520. Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!!
