I just got my 338-284 back from Pac-Nor a couple of weeks ago and fired 50 fireforming loads using 338-06 data.

I was just wondering if anybody has done much experimenting with this round. I seem to remember a post from Ray that he used to have one.

Any secret recipes out there? If not I will start with 338-06 "starting" load data and work up. Any thoughts.

Jim

338, An interesting round. I'm a .33 bore fan & have thought a .338x.284 in a M700SA @ about 7#, would be a great elk rig. How is your rifle set up?
I think you are on the right track w/ the 06 data. I have had good success w/ IMR4320 & RL15 & the 210gr NP in my .338-06. I would think COL would be a bit long w/ 250gr's in a SA. Let us know how it developes.

Fred,

Mine is a Ruger 77 (older tang safety version), Pac-Nor #1 contour stainless match grade barrel, Timney triger, Ruger factory UL wood stock.

The rig weighs in around 8#'s scoped. The reason I went with the Ruger is the longer magazine box. Off the top of my head I think it measures around 3.2", I may be wrong though.

For COL, I normally don't worry too much about that. I only load two rounds, one in the chamber and one in the mag. By only loading one in the mag, I get the added benefit of the loading ramp which allows a longer COL.

I am also a HUGE 338 fan. Currently in my battery I have a:

Sako TRG-S 338 Lapua
Dakota 76 330 Dakota
Magnum Research Mountain Eagle 338 Win Mag
Ruger 77 338-284

I have had a 340 WBY and traded it, wish I wouldn't have now. I'll keep you updated on the progress.

Jim
