My nephew is getting a 270 for his 16th birthday this month. While he has shot a couple of my magnums he like the recoil of my 25-06 or less. I was going to load him some low recoil loads to start with then work upwards.

Figures some light construct 130gr or less. (not varmint) and a load of something like 38-40grs of 4896. Would give around 2650+/-

Any ideas?

Remington's Low Recoil ammo, seems to be using 35 grains of what appears to be IMR 4198...

Loaded some up with IMr 4198 and they chronographed about the same...

30 to 33 grains of IMR 4198 and a 130 grain bullet will recoil like a 243 with a 100 grain factory load....

25 to 30 grains of SR 4759 are also a light recoiling but get the job done loads....

if you don't like the faster powder routes...

I also do loads for some other kids with 270s, that we use a 130 grain ballistic tip with 44 grains of H 380... it chronographs right at 2600 fps... and has proven to be very very accurate...

good luck,
cheers

Good idea, IMO. I'm not near my records, but I think I started load workup in my last 270 Win at 54g or 55g of H4831, and I think I recall it to be at around 2700 fps, with a Hornady 130g Interlock. It was reasonably accurate, factor I attributed to that amount of powder filling the case close to 90% full.

I was trying to get close that that. Most bullets I've seen below 130 are varmint type.
I have about 5# of 4895. No 4198 but I do have some 4759. Most of my other powders are a lot slower.

Here is a load that I came accross on an internet forum that is low recoil and VERY accurate in my 270:

"accuracy load" for the 270 Winchester using a 130 grain bullet to be 43.5 grains of IMR4064 powder which yields 2724 fps with 39,000 C.U.P.

here is another load recommended by John Barsness (sp?):

"I have also had good luck with around 42 grains of IMR4895 and a 130-grain Hornady Spire Point. It not only takes deer neatly, but recoils gently and leaves lots of wild turkey left over if there happens to be a rifle season open in the fall"

I assusme you have looked at Hodgdon's youth loads here
I also recall Hodgdon claiming that their H-4895 is flexible enough to be loaded as light as 60% of maximum charge and still be safe from potential problems. I think the Sierra 110 gr load published should be just what you are looking for. And since the Sierra 110 gr SP is a Pro Hunter (as opposed to a Varminter) Pro Hunter applications it should work reasonably well for medium game at short to medium range.

Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.

You know what they say about assuming. Wink I had not seen the Hodgdon youth data. It is very usefull. Load Tech had given roughly the same 4805 load for a 130.
I have also never used a Sierra bullet in almost 40 years of handloading and had not considered their 110. Guess it is time to check them out.

Thanks all for your imput.

Seafire, I believe that you posted some loading data using Blue Dot powders but I did not have a chance to make note of it. Can you give some light loads for the .270 using 110 Sierra's and .30/06 using Speer 100 gr plinkers and Sierra 125 gr. bullets. Thanks.

I probably wouldn't load down a .270, I thought all of those are low recoil loads! With a 16 year old, I'd just put some lead shot in the butt for practice and it'll kick less than a .25-06. Take it out when he goes hunting, he'll never know the difference and you won't have to re-sight everything in when you go to full power loads. Let him shoot a couple of .458 Lotts and he won't think a .270 has amy recoil at all. On second thought probably not a good idea..
