Are there any members loading the 270WSM in or around Melbourne, Australia? I suddenly need a really light rifle for a backpack sambar hunt and my 338 Sako is not that, weighing more than 9lb. I do have a Tikka T3 Lite in 270WSM, bought for tahr hunting, for which I'm happy to buy extremely hot factory ammo. Though legal for sambar, it is a bit small but might do if I could get some tough, heavy bullets loaded not too fast. A handful is all I would need, so I'm in no hurry to kit up with dies and new powder if I can avoid it.

So, if anyone loads this calibre in my neck of the woods, I'd like to talk turkey.

Cheers

you could use 63,5 grains of Reloader 19 behind of 140 Accubonds. Primer is a RWS 5333 (magnum) and
C.O.L is 73mm. (Winchester brass)
V3= 960m/s. This load is good for most of the game that I hunt out to 600 meters.
I have the very same rifle, meanwhile I did some bedding because accuracy was an issue when in very cold weather.

Please let me know if you need more information

G'Day Fella's,

Sambar Man, get your self some Australian made www.woodleighbullets.com.au for your .270 WSM and go from there!
Either that or sell off the boat anchor Sako, and get a Rem 700 in .338WM or .375 H&H Mag!!!

Hope that helps

Doh Homer

Thanks Leupoldo,
I have been using the 140gr Accubonds in both Winchester and Federal factory loads and they both shoot well. The only Tahr I've shot have been with Remington 150gr Accutips (supposedly at 3200fps, which equals some .300 magnums) and they worked well at 300 yards.

The trouble with sambar is they are a big, tough deer found in thick bush. I'm hoping to get some 160-180gr bullets loaded that might dig in deep. The only reason I would want any great velocity would be to stop the slugs key-holing under 100 yards.

I will use the Accubonds and possibly 150gr Win PowerPoints if I can't get anyone to help me make something better. I know of a couple of guys in Melbourne that reload commercially but they don't have the dies for this calibre and don't plan to get any.

Thanks Homer,
your post didn't pop up until I'd sent Leupoldo's.

I know where I can find some 180gr Woodleigh PPs and would use them if I could get someone to load them or lend me the dies. As said, this is a special app. and probably the only time I'll ever want reloads for this calibre. (By the two-thou expanded webs, I can't see the cases lasting long, anyway.)

As for the boat anchor, I have to tell you that 'Betsy' has been my favorite rifle for 30 years and her weight means nothing to me except when I have to carry a 40-pound pack as well Smiler

Cheers
