I have purchased some (cast bullets) 350 gr Lasercast Bullets. I will be using them in a 458 Win Mag. The only load data I can find is for 45/70 and the like. I called Lasercast but they don't have any load info for a 458 win mag. I would just like to shoot reduced loads at targets, paper, milk jugs or what ever.Say 1400-1500 ft per second. I would not use these for hunting at all. Were can I get any reloading info?

Call Marshall Stanton at Beartooth bullets. Tell him what you have (458) and ask him what he recommends. Order what he recommends. He'll give you all the info you need. VERY knowledgeable a/b cast bullets.

my lyman book show loads for 292,385,482,and 552 gr Lyman cast bullets,in the 458 win mag
The loads shown for the 385 gr bullet(Lyman # 457124,cast of #2 alloy) are as follows.

using unique,a starting charge of 18 grs yields 1315 fps-up to 22 grs 1510fps,so for each powder type

unique)18gr=1315 to 22 gr=1510
2400)25gr=1310 to 31 gr=1565
IMR4227)44gr=1935 to 50 gr=2090
IMR4198)53gr=2010 to 57 gr=2125
IMR3031)59gr=1900 to 68 gr=2210
IMR4064 62gr=1860 to 70 gr=2115

the second loads for each powder are maximum, and the 3031 and 4064 max loads are noted as compressed.
The rifle listed is a Ruger #1,24" barrel,with a 1-14 twist,and using winchester 8 1/2-120 primers.
As usual, use info with caution,I accept no responsibility .
If you would like the other bullet weight loads,I can scan the pages and email them to you.

My #13 Speer manual lists the CCI 250 and 26 - 30 grains of SR 4759 for their 400-grain jacketed bulllet, at a velocity of1262 - 1445 fps. You will have to extrapolate, but it is at least a jumping off point...

Since your bullet is somewhat lighter than the one listed,I would think so,but of course, the final judgement is yours.Big cases with a pinch of powder make me nervous.
Also, the manual shows bullets of #2 alloy, which is fairly soft, your hardcast bullet loads may show higher pressure,so be careful.

I found 2 loads for that cast bullet that should get about 1,400 fps:

1) 20 grains of unique
2) 27 grains of 2400

I just started using IMR SR 4759 for reduced loads. The recoil feels like a soft push. You might like it with standard primers.

Try a 500 grn cast bullet just below the speed of sound at about 1100 fps. SR 4759 should work great.

I used to shoot alot of cast through my #1 and my go to load was a 405 with 25 grains of 2400. It was accurate and mild. Im sure the previous advice of 27 with your bullet would work well.

Some of the loads for the 45-70 could be good starting points and then load up to get the performance you are looking for. Monitor for pressure signs on the way up. Each rifle is different and responds differently.

And in the .458 Win. Mag. case, both these loads will result in flash-over and detonation of the charge. Flash-over occurs when powder lies along the bottom of the case and the primer flashes across the surface.

Both Unique and 2400 are PISTOL powders.

You want to use a RIFLE powder like 4895. You could use light loads for 45/70, but you'd be wise to use a "filler" in the case. Case fillers are available in reloading supplies. One is Kapok.

I bought a box of the same bullets, .459" dia. 350 gr. Oregon Trails LaserCast. I expected to use them for 45/70, and I have a .458 Win. Mag. too. But the Win. Mag. just seems a poor candidate for a lead bullet load.
