got a rem 788 for 9 yr old grandson i'm scoping, cleaning etc. he really wants to shoot it next time he visits hopefully around xmas so i need a reduced load that won't scare him off it. 150 gr sp is what i'm loading currently for whitetail. actually i guess i need 2 loads, a soft target load and a minimum recoil hunting load for a 50 yd max shot. and, i may just delay the hunt until he's ready for an acceptable hunt load. he shoots a 410 during dove season with no problems. loves it. big kid. yes, i have reloading manuals (6) but looking for real life loads here. thanks

I played with quite a few low small game loads in my .30-06 and .270. In both I used 10 gr. Unique and in the .270 a 90 gr. Sierra and in the 06 a 110 Sierra. Both were very mild and very accurate loads. I'm sure he could shoot the hell out of his .308 using my .30-06 load for practice and fun!

Shoots app. 1 1/2" low at 25 yds with a 100 yd. zero.

If you used any of the "4895"s, that is IMR 4895, H 4895, and AA2495, you can cut the load significantly and still have accuracy and decent velocity.

M70 26" Kreiger Barrel, four groove, 1:10 twist

168 Nosler 39.0 grs AA2495, CAVIM 90 cases WLR

18 Aug 2002 T = 90 °F

Ave Vel = 2532
Std Dev = 20
ES = 84
Low = 2491
High = 2575
N = 19

Ruger M77 MKII
26 " Barrel 1:10 twist

150 Sierra Matchking 39.0 grs IMR 4064 Lot 2449 LC67 CC#34
OAL 2.750"
30 April 2008 T = 71 °F

Ave Vel = 2416
Std Dev = 52
ES = 113
High = 2479
Low = 2366
N = 5

I think IMR 3031 is an outstanding powder for low to mid range velocity 308 loads

M70 pre 64 Feather Weight 22" barrel

150 Hornady FMJBT 41.0 grs IMR 3031 LC Mixed WLR (brass) OAL 2.750

4 Dec 2013 T = 71 °F

Ave Vel = 2616
Std Dev = 64
ES = 212
High = 2678
Low = 2466
N = 9

Use cast bullets and Unique powder for a mild load. For hunting, a .22 centerfire makes a better choice than most people think. I know from several years and a whole bunch of youth getting their deer._

I use IMR SR4759.
You should find data @ imrpowder.com or load books.

Hmm. 300 Savage is basically the same case. 30-30 is not even close.

The only thing that is basically the same is the head size and they are both made of brass.

Depends what bullet you are using! I use 38 gr. powder in my .30-30 with a 125 gr. Bullet and 38 gr. of a different powder in my .300 Savage with a 170 gr. bullet.

You can download H-4895 to 60% of the maximum load for any bullet Hodgton provides data for.

So persnickety. The T-65 (308) design was based on the 300 Savage. The biggest difference between them is that the 308 runs at higher pressure then the 300 Savage and the 308 has a longer neck and a different shoulder angle. So what? If you want to split hairs then yes, there are other slight variations, but they are minute details and splitting hairs is just what discussing it would amount to. The bottom line in regards to the current topic is that the 308 can EASILY be loaded down by using 300 Savage data. And it works particularly well with jacketed bullets. If you are shooting cast bullets then 308 data will already be reduced so no need to bother.

I used to take 400 '06 loads three nights a week. To the 50 foot indoor range for teaching women and kids how to shoot the big rifles without getting hurt or scared.

Load was: 110gr cast RN, 4 gr Red Dot. They're accurate to about 75 yards.
Seems like that turned 'em out at 1125fps or some such vel real close.

No reason to buy a new rifle---use what you have and let him grow into it if necessary! After all this is the ACCURATE RELOADING site!

H-4895 is what you are wanting to use. If you go to Hodgdon's reloading website and enter in the caliber and then the bullet weight and powder it will give you the loads. They even offer up reduced loads.

If you can find the 300AAC Blackout 110gr bullets they will make for softer shooting and will open at lower velocities.

Townsend Whelen had a load for the 06 that was a 147 military bullet that supposedly shot to the same POA as his hunting load zero at short distances that he used for small game.

I’m at work now, so don’t have access to my library, but that would translate well to a .308 plinking load. Downside is it might be a no longer available powder.

Trail boss might also be an option.

As several have noted above, the various 4895’s can be downloaded as well, so that might be the route for a hunting acceptable load.

Many of the above posts are full of good advice.

To easily, effectively and quickly reduce recoil, use a lighter bullet!

My youngest daughter has a 300 WSM, which I bought for her, but I wanted a way lighter recoiling load for her so I went with 130 Barnes and a minimum charge of RL-15. Worked like a champ on deer and elk. She now shoots full throttle loads with the 150 Barnes.

You can use any pistol powder for reduced loads.

All depends on how velocity you want.

My favorite is UNIQUE.

But others are just as good, in all cartridges, up the 577 T.Rex.

All right, I'll take the bait, Saeed! I simply have to know what you're doing with pistol powders and a 577 T-Rex. That has to be some huuuge fun playing with that!

PS - Apologies for the off-topic post. Someone please kick it back in line. Big Grin

Simple.

Reduced loads.

I just gave that as an example.

I load reduced loads in almost every conceivable cartridge.

It really is nothing magical about.

My daughter shoots the load with 48 grains of UNIQUE.

A gung-ho macho man shoots 186 grains of VVN 550.

Same bullet.

Slightly different results clap

There's also data/formula for reduced loads in larger cases with TrailBoss powder:

https://hodgdon.com/wp-content...duced-loads-2018.pdf

70% to 100% case fill and low velocities.

I use AA 5744. Send an email to accurate powder and they will send you all the data for any caliber you want to know about. They do it very quickly no fillers needed lots and lots of fun. Bigger calibers and reduced loads are a lot of fun. Many people on this site don’t seem to like them for some reason or they are not necessary but they are a lot of fun.

Also there is no problem with hunting with reduced loads. I have started several young people with reduced loads in 25-06 no problems and my son shot his first deer with a 243 reduced load. Like using a 223 for deer, one must know the limitations.

Have fun!
