I have just purchsed a 458 win in Rem 700 custom shop. I am looking at lighter grain bullets around 300 or less. 300 is probably the minimum ?? Does anyone have data for the lighter grain pills. I will be using this for Texas varmits. Pigs and such.
Regards,
Tacksmacker

Tack,
I've had great luck shooting the 350 and 300 grain X bullets in the .458 Win. (and .460 Wby.). I've had many full body length penetrations on wild pigs with those bullets out of that cartridge. In fact, even though I used those loads to finish off wounded pigs for several years I never recovered a single bullet.
I didn't have very good penetration with the Hornady 350 grainers and the 45/70 style 300 grain hollow points wouldn't penetrate at all (obviously going too fast).

I'm sorry I don't have my loads with me, but I believe I had the best results with IMR 3031. The Barnes book should have some good date for you.
If you think my old load would help you, email me and I'll try to get it to you next week.

Take care,
Kyler

Try the Lyman #47 manual for reduced loads. I used unique and 300 gr cast bullets . I got like 1400 fps and nice accuracy. Fun/light 45-70 loads basically.
