Brian Canadapowder for max fps with moderate cup in 50-110
Hello all, My current project is a 50-110 winchester on a single shot SB2 frame.
Does anybody have a favourite powder for the following purpose?
- 500 grain bullet in 50-110 winchester.
- Giving good balance of higher f.p.s.and lower c.u.p. (I'm hoping for velocity above 1800 fps and pressure under 34000 cup.)
I have found that getting help on this stuff from you folks really shortens my research and field testing. I appreciate it on the big bores. (re. time and recoil. I'm getting a bit long in the tooth.)
Thanks, in advance for any suggestions. Brian

dpcdI never loaded my 50-110s that fast; what is an SB2 frame?
It is going to be something in the 4350 range.

RapidrobI use IMR-3031 for the rally heavy bullets.

4350 is similar burn rate to N550. I will try it for the 50-110.
I assume that what I am looking for is in a sweet spot between 4350 and IMR 3031.
I am hoping that the powder I settle on fills the case full. Brian

GrandpasezBest powder of any on the list is RE17, or Swiss 60, which is same.
If using that 50-110 case load it out a little, as I know it will hold
85 gr of RE17 and will still be 35,000 psi. And be over 1800 easy.
But as long as you have singleshot if you can get brass make it 50-140,
then it is easy to load with slower powders, to get speed, and low pressures,
and cases size easier and brass lasts twice as long.Ed

Brian CanadaEd, Thanks very much for posting. I was about to write you about this. Good advice as usual.
We are still having trouble getting Reloader powder up here in Canada. Same with Swiss powder. Can you make a suggestion for a substitute for Re 17 for this application?
Also, right now, 50-140 brass is as rare as bird poop in a coo-coo clock. I will go with 50-110 and load it out a bit as you suggest.
Also, as you know, I am having a ball with your 24GA. From Hell. (577 NE). I will get it blooded in Africa next month!
Cheers, Brian

Brian CanadaHello Lane, Thanks for your post. Unfortunately we can't get Reloader powder up here in Canada these days, for some reason.

GrandpasezBrian- If you can get them use Vv 540, Vv550,
W760- H414, Ramshot Hunter. Folks; Notice I stay away from singlebase
stick powders, even in 585HE and 24ga Fh, as they get to peak pressure faster
and at the same peak pressure, expand brass more for about the same speed.
We figure little more of right powder getting to same peak pressure and speed
is cheaper than wearing out hard to find expensive cases. Ed

Brian CanadaThanks Ed, I think I will give N540 and/or H414 a whirl in the 50-110.
Ed, How do you thing N540 or H414 would work in my 24GA. FH (577NE)? Too fast burning maybe?
Right now N550 is the perfect volume in my 24GA FH for two cards and one fiber wad, but it leaves some unburned powder. Not that I worry about that. (116-118 grains/700 gr cast bullet.)

GrandpasezThey would be fine in a bolt action or falling block
at the same or more amounts than your using of N550,
You got about the right load for the NEF and the N550 powder,116gr.
You could use less of other two,100-105gr, and put in extra wad.
As far a unburnt powder in hot climate it'll have less.Ed

GrandpasezThe term I use is fuller pressure after the peak pressure,
I as a wildcatter, think of how much speed we have versus case expansion.
Say A singlebase powder that gets to peak at 4 milliseconds. Little slower, double base
powder with a little more in the case, getting to same peak pressure, but taking twice
as long to get to peak pressure, will have more speed and less case expansion.
More speed as the overall pressure average is higher. We are not talking
20-30-40% speed difference, but 5-10%. And 10% more speed is 20% more energy.Ed
