Im considering building a long range 284 win. I think the case and bullet selection is quite good, but for some reason you dont hear of them all that often. Can i build one on a short action or will i need to use a long? It will mostly be single loaded. Thanks.

I've had four 284s over the years, all have been barrel jobs, 3 of which were on longs actions and one of which was on a short action. I prefer the long, but then, some will say, just get a 280. Whatever, I like the 284 case better.

If you built it ona 700 LA or 721 you shouldn't need any feedrail modifications, and in fact they seem to feed quite nicely.

You'll want to have a longer throat cut if you go with a long action, say to accomodated a 3-3.1" OAL is good.

I've actually got one I might be willing to sell if you're interested. It's got less than 100 rounds, and on a Remington 721 (long action). Barrel is a 24" pac-nor #4, at 24" with a 1-9 twist. Barrel is stainless with a nice beadblasted matte finished.

The short, fat .284 Win. case is a little better in the accuracy department due to better ignition uniformity. If I were build ing one for a long-range, single loading target rifle, I'd try to find a single-shot action like the old FN's or the Shilen DGA's that have no cut in the bottom for a magazine. They are much stiffer and make it easier to get top-notch accuracy. Seat your long-range target bullet to the base of the case neck, and make up some dummies like this for throating the barrel.
