I have read several posts recommending loads for Reloader 22 and 180 grn bullets for the 300 Win Mag. I have experimented in the past with Reloader 22 but have never hunted with it and have always relied on H4831 & H4831SC for my 300 Win. The last time I experimented with Rel 22 that the accuracy and POI chnaged as the outside temp. dropped. It was in the mid-70s during the 1st shooting session with great accuracy and mid-40s when I tested them again at which point POI changed and the groups opened up significantly. I did not have a chrono to determine if there was any velocity variance. Is this a normal characteristic of Rel 22? Has anyone had similar experience? Any work arounds?

Regards,
Brian

RL22 is notorious for temp sensitivity. Bump the charge up a bit for cold weather.

I was at 76 grns as is... which seemed to be a max load. How much of a bump?

Brian

brianbo,

I've been shooting my 300 a pretty good bit this summer and I just couldn't get R22 to work for me. It shot some ok groups but, H4831 was more consistent. I haven't found another Powder as good as H4831 for this cart yet. IMR 7828 and IMR4350 worked well but, H4831 still came out on top.

All rifles are diff. so, you may find a stellar load w/ it.

Good Luck

brianbo, Reloder 22 is to the 300 win mag, what butter is to bread. I have two 300 win mags and both of them love the stuff. I have at least six or more friends who shoot 300's and theirs also love Reloder 22. I don't think there is a better powder for the 300 win mag. Try it. I personally have not had any problems as far as temperature sensitivity. I have been using this stuff for over ten years on 300's and it works great.

For what it's worth, it's a Whitworth Mark X action, PacNor stainless barrel. H4831 has been my stalwart with excellent accuracy. For those using this powder, what are your pet loads for 180 & 200 grn bullets... Nosler Partitions are my go-to bullets.

Brian

I would ONLY bump the cold weather loads,.not the hot weather loads. I might jump it .5-1.0 gr and watch closely for pressure. (fire them during the cold temps,..not the hot temps) and match the velocity of the warm wether load.

We had a great load at 74gr rl22 and 178gr a-max in a sendero.

I have shot my 300 many times this summer, I did not have much luck with RE22, I'm using IMR4350 now but I have 8lbs of H4350 and will change over to it, assuming it shoots as good. It is a more stable powder.

I used many different powders with my .300 Win mag over the years but after discovering RL-22 it will not shoot anything but RL-22 and will scream and jump up and down if I try anything else through it. I also shoot RL-22 with my .257 Wby, a buddies 7mm Wby, and my .340 Wby, .358 STA, .416 Rigby. I have used it from 20 below zero in Alaska and Colorado to 100 degrees in Africa, and could discern no significant change in performance of my rifles in the field. I have several Elk hunting buddies who sware by it in their .300's also. wave Good shooting.

73 grains for 190s. 73-74 for 180s. 70-71 for 200s. That's what's been working the best in my 26" tube.

Velocity on the 190s is 2920, 180s slightly faster, and 200s are about 2800-2820.

Good Luck!
