Somewhere along the line I aquired a .223 RCBS die circa 1982 that tears the rims of cases quite often. I've developed a technique to remove the stuck cases from this die so I've just lived with the problem.( This is not a case lube problem.) Well having got a little POed this week I ordered a new die set, another ID chamfering tool and a shell holder from Mid Way. Side note [Shipping for these was over $9.00] The refurbishing of the sticky die began with a vise to hold the die, an electric hand drill, a sloted rag holding jag and a rag saturated with 1000 grit lapping compound. After a large number of rotations with the lapping compound a slury of Bon Amy and 409 replaced it. More revolutions and than a switch over to Colgate tooth paste. Next the die was put in the press and a case coverd with colgate was shoved in and out while screwing the die farther down on each stroke. This was done as far as could be without serious jamming. The die was thoroughly cleaned and reassembeled. Problem has seemed to have disapeared. Am passing this along in case someone runs into a similar situation. Oddly enough the cases that got their lips pulled off went into the die like they were made of butter. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! This can occur if there is a petroleum based oil in the die. Some dies are sprayed with a preservative that has to be washed out. Use Imperial Die Wax and never look back! Good luck!

Lip ripping Die??? You might want to consider sitting a bit farther back from the Press.

Hmmm, rips lips and a polishing with Colgate fixed it. Sounds like a dental not a die problem. I would have sent it back to RCBS long before this. They are very good about repairing or replacing when these kinds of problems arise. I`m glad you`ve got it working properly though. Thought of that but shipping costs persuaded me to treat myself to a new die. Besides I would need something while they were repairing or replacing it. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward.
