Ladies and Gentlemen:

Thanks to Bren Mk 1 for his previous post on this topic. Just thought I would provide a description of the process of forming 404 Jeffery brass from 375 Rem UM with a few extra details.

1. Lube the inside of the case mouth, a q-tip
with a little bit of lube works fine.
2. Expand the case mouth but don't run the
case up any further in the die.
3. Wipe off any case lube on the outside of
the case mouth, apply a very thin film of
lube about halfway down the case.
4. Run the case about halfway up the die and
withdraw. Wipe off the thin ring of case
lube on the neck; if you don't, it will
cause shoulder dents on the next pass.
5. Put a very thin film on the case and run
it up the rest of the way into the die.
Withdraw your lovely 404 Jeffery case,
congratulate yourself on your good taste
in rifles and cleverness. Repeat as
necessary.


If you get unexplained shoulder dents after
about 15-20 cases, clean the
expander/decapper. Case lube has accumulated
behind it and is dripping down on the case
when you withdraw it. I find it unneccssary
to go through the tedious and time consuming
task of fireforming the cases. I just tumble
polish, trim and load. They shoot just fine.
These cases feed and chamber just fine, save
your 404 headstamped cases for your trips

ever try imperial sizing wax? we are talking .005 here, which is a huge amount to crush.. the imperial tends to avoid the compression/expansion dents from the lube being crushed enough to ex-gas.

Imperial sizing wax would make the process much easier, just don't have any on hand, making do with what I have. Will try some the next go around.
