Any suggestions on a accurate 458 Lott load @ 2200-2250 FPS (500 gr). A bit off max to reduce recoil.

This load works well for me but I don't know how fast it's going.

I have been doing a little research on the net and have looked at some historical posts on this forum.
It would appear that most folks like RL-15 and IMR 4320 with 500 gr bullets. Interestingly enough both are recommended @ between 81 gr and 83 gr. (2100-2200 fps)
I have also noted Varget @ 83 gr and Win 748 @ 84 gr. (not so sure how stable the win 748 is @ temp extremes??).
From what I have sensed the IMR 4320 and RL-15 listing are rather mild and should be of somewhat reduced recoil.
I have a 470 double (Heym) and hope to have the Lott recoil in that realm.
Any personal references to thes eloads would be appreciated.

I have not tried R15,but H4895 is easily available(or has been) and has the velocity and accuracy anyone can ask for,WITHOUT COMPRESSION that deformes you round.Shoots the 500gr aframes and Woodleigh fmj's to the same place(assuming you've done your homework). You can't ask for anything more.

How is the recoil with the H4895? Just looking in my Hornady Manual they list 74.2 as max. however that is with a Wiseman not a factory barrel as in my CZ 550.
I am going to make 5-6 different loads (3 ea.) to Chrono and check accuracy. I will put this load on my list. It appears very accurate!

Thanks!

I sent an e-mail to Hodgen for some info regarding Win 748 (Hodgen bought Win. powders) and H335 which are both double based spherical powders.
I have always heard that these powders are very temperature sensitive.
Hodgen confirmed those concerns. They suggested that if I wanted a temperature stable powder to consider H4895, Varget or Benchmark (their extruded offerings).

Food for thought if you are loading to max and then going to a high temp environment.
Things might get "sticky".

Recoil is stiff as it will always be when shooting 500 gr. bullets at 2,000+ fps velocities. Since my CZ 550 has a cushy recoil pad, the recoil isn't painful though.

I have had some informative dialog with a gentleman at Accurate Arms regarding some loading data on the 458 Lott. AA 2520 and 2230 typically yield some of the highest velocities with a 500 gr bullet that are published in any reloading manual.
These max's are listed at about 60 KPSI.
I asked if at these max listings do they anticipated any sticking of the actions at high ambient temps and their response was no.
The max load for the AA 2520 was about 86gr. (2310 FPS) I asked if I backed off 4 grains could I expect 2200 FPS and what would the pressure be?
He did not respond to the velocity specifically but he did say that the pressure drops off very fast and anticipated it to be approximately 48-50 KPSI.
I am going to try this load and see what happens as far as recoil, accuracy and velocity (chrono'd).
All guns are different so it should be interesting???

I use 80 grains of IMR 3031 with Hornady 500 sp or solids. I shoot it out of 23" barrel Ruger 77 @ 2230 fps. Its very accurate and the recoil is on the stiff side but not bad.
