I am back to playing with a 243 win, havnt for awhile now. I see a lot of loads with powders like IMR 7828 or H1000. Good vel, but in 24 and 26" barrels. How would they do in a 22" tube? Only interested in 100 grn bullet loads at this point.
Thirty year’s ago it was well proven that powders which give the highest velocities in long barrels will almost always do so in short barrels. Accuracy may or may not be better, and muzzle blast will certainly be greater.

Shooting 100 grain bullets in the 243 I have had excellent results using H-450 (no longer available but I still have a couple of pounds), H-4831, and IMR-4831. I'm talking 3150 to 3200 fps in a 22" barrel and consistent 1" groups. Personally I see no need to go to slower powders.
You didn't say what velocity you were expecting to get? H1000 is not that slow. I use imr4350 for all my 100/105 bullets and get around 2900f/s Mauser with a 22" barrel. H414 and H4831 are great for the 95gr burger and the 100 gr sierra hp.

I was hoping to get close to 3000 fps. I had always used IMR 4350, but have read lately that it is considered a bit fast and "spikey" pressure wise compared to slower powders. I have several pounds of H450 and WW 785, so I will start there. Mag primer or not with the ball powders?
RL17 may get your results, its usually a bit faster FPS vs 4350 for about the same charge, but I believe with a bit less pressure. RL22 would also do it, and If have no qualms using it in a 22" bbl
If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

Once upon a time I would have tried and chrono'd every powder and 100 grn bullet I could get. Now I have to many other more interesting cartridges I'd rather play with, so I'm being lazy and asking you guys what you think.
41grs accurate 4350 RP cases WLR primers pushed 100 grain bullets over 4000ft/sec. With no high pressure indicaters from a 24" barrel. roger

Historically the .243 has always leaned towards slow burning powder..H870 was a winner back then but alas it is no more,,the 4831s have always been a good choice.
