This year during deer hunting I discovered a deer trail that could give me a 300 yd shot with my 308 using a 150 partiton gold. Forecast impact would be about 2140 fps at 300 yds. Does anyone think this bullet might be too tough to get a good expansion with that shot?? (Reason I don't want to go to something like an accubond or ballistic tip is my normal hunting shot would be close range with twigs in the way and the partiton has done real well at this)

Partitions actually have a very thin jacket at the nose and are very fast expanding until the thicker jacket material by the "partition" is reached. They are designed to be fast expanding and lose most of the bullet nose. Nosler on their web site lists 1800 fps as the min recommended impact velocity with Partitions for proper performance, I believe. ------------------------------------ The trouble with the Internet is that it's replacing masturbation as a leisure activity. ~Patrick Murray "Why shouldn`t truth be stranger then fiction? Two years ago I shot a mule deer at a lasered 331 yds with my '06 using the 150gr Moly Free Partition Gold. Velocity on both should be close. Entrance wound was about the size of a nickle, both lungs destroyed, and exit the size of a silver dollar. Deer did not take one step and went straight down. One of the quickest kills I've ever had. Zero meat lost. Hit the internet and bought all I could find. Ended up with about 900 bullets. I will say that some of the six 30 caliber rifles I own don't like them. My 308s tolerate them at 1" to 1.5" and 2 other .30-06s will only group from1.5" to 2" but my Colt Light Rifle cloverleafs them with a 59gr of H4350. One hell of a bullet if your gun likes them.

I don't know about the 150gr/308NPG but the 160gr 7mm is quite a bit tougher, expands less, than the std. NP. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

The Partition Gold is constructed the same up front, but has the "partition" moved foreward to limit the expansion over the std Nosler and retain more wgt. (Noslers "usually" lose their front cores.) They both are thin jacketed at the tip and start expanding pretty much the same Edited to add, Nosler also added a steel cup to the rear of the bullet to help mantain the cores integrety. This has no effect on inital expansion though. ------------------------------------ The trouble with the Internet is that it's replacing masturbation as a leisure activity. ~Patrick Murray "Why shouldn`t truth be stranger then fiction? I know the fornt core is more forward, but I also believe the construction is lsightly "tougher" at elast my own 7mm tests show this. Fired @ identical vel. in wetpack, the 160grPG shows significantly less expansion & rtains more of it's weight. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

The PTG has a different jacket taper in the front half. I have sectioned the .308 - 150 gr version. I'd estimate 50% thicker when you get to the partition. Kid took an August buck with one at about 50 yds in his .308 Win. Speaking of which, anyone know where to get some .308/150gr and .338/250gr moly free versions?

well...it was time to do a little work on my own behalf on this. I had a regular 180 part on hand and of course the 150 moly part gold. Held them both against a grinder wheel till I got them pretty much sectioned off. The jackets start off the same but the hollow point on the part gold is AMAZING. I say "hollow point" cause that's about all it is. The jacket on the "gold" quickly gets thicker and the lead cavity stops about 1/2 the way between the ogive of the bullet and the tip. There really isn't alot of lead in this bullet! If I had to explain it I'd almost call it a lead tipped ttsx. From what I'm looking at I would not be afraid to run this 150 after an elk. I can't imagine this part gold not holding at least 75-85% of it's original wt from what I'm looking at. I do believe it will start to open on a deer at 308 speed out to 300 yds but I think I'm gonna check my good old plain jain sierra 150 flat bases for accuracy and try to load them for that kind of shot.

They've all gone now I think. I wasted a couple of boxes playing with them. You know an accurate load but changed the scope and then worked on the trigger so had to rezero each time and then changed powder lots etc. I have 3 boxes left and 1.5lb of powder and a rifle that is now completely set up. I plan on loading 150 and only using on big deer.... They are a really great bullet that had to be dropped for e bullets etc.
