The vihtavouri load data for the 8x57 mauser shows a 200 grain nosler partition pushed by n160 at 2695 fps. This is a max load but it seems pretty interesting. It'd sure clobber deer and black bear. Does anyone have any experience with this powder. No one in the area seems to carry it and I figured I'd better ask around before paying haz mat.
Thanks for any replies,
Kedron

I believe it's BS. I use n150(better powder for 8x57 mauser) and 196 grain bullet. The maximum load for my rifle gives 2625 fps.

I found another load on robsoft loads with this data. Dont know if it's a maximum load but i wouldn't go any higher.

Norma Oryx 196 grains Vihtavuori N-160 58,2 grains CCI 200 LR 2641 fps

I don't believe its possible to get that speed

Nosler listed 2700fps with a 200gr partition and 4350 powder. Most people get best velocity with H-414

I don't get those speeds from mine, but I only have a 20" barrel

Hmm maybe it's possible if Nosler listed it. Seams strange but...

I filled up 58,2 grain in a Norma case and it filled it up completly. No way i can get a 200 grain bullet in that case.

I found a thread about 8x64S and 200 grain Accubond and he's trying to get over 2625 fps. Don't believe it's easier with partition.

Not possible to get those speeds with my 24" barrel anyway....

I found another listing of n160 and the 8x57 in the
Lee manual. They list a 200 grain bullet and 56.2 grains as being a compressed charge. Maybe their are relative levels of compression but 2 grains worth seems kinda scary. I appreciate your input guys. I'm gonna keep using varget for everything for now.

With those slow powders like VV N160, RTE22, etc., it is possible to achieve some very impressive velocities from small cases. For example, over 2700 FPS with a 175-grain bullet in the 7X57mm.

Those hot 200-grain loads from the 8X57mm are probably in the same category. The basic problem with such loads IS GETTING ALL THAT POWDER INTO THE CASES!! This often requires the use of a long drop tube, incremental loading of the charge with a powder settling step between increments, etc.

If I recall, Jack O'Connor had an H4831 load for the .270 Win. with 150-grain bullets that gave over 3000 FPS. I believe the load was 61 or 62 grains. Yet, if one just dumps 62 grains of H4831 into a funnel over the mouth of a .270 Win. case, there's at least 3 grains or so that won't go into the case, beause it seems to be full. Some other approach is needed to get it all in, and still be able to seat a bullet.

It is easier to just use smaller charges of faster powders, but of course the absolute maximum attainable velocities have to be lower due to higher pressures produced by the faster propellants.

I've just started playing w/ VV160 in my .338-06. It's a bit slower than VV150 & you can get more powder in the case & reach higher vel. w/ lower pressures. I seem to be moving this way w/ all my rifle rounds, slower powders for max. load density. Accuracy is usually improved as well.

My 1997, 2000 and 2002 Viht reloading guides lists a maximum load of 56,2 gr N160 giving a velocity of 785 m/s (2575 fps) with a COL of 81,0 mm.
I don't know from wich source you got your 2695 fps info?

Their website loading data confirms the OP's load/velocity.
