I'm toying with the idea of replacing 2400 on my reloading bench with H110. Am currently using 2400 for 357, 45Long, and 45-70.

Looks good for the .36 and 45 colt....but the 45-70????? Can't find any info.

Anyone got any Marlin/Nef power level loads using 300gr and/or 405gr bullets? (Jacketed 300s - Lead 405s)

Badgerrr-

I use 29.5 grs. of 2,400 behind 350 gr. bullets in my .45-70. It is one of the two best loads in my Browning '86 for accuracy. I would think 30-to-31 grains of H-110 (W-296)should work just about the same. Of course, I'd expect anyone trying it to start a couple of grains low and work up.

You want to be careful using H110 powder in large cases. It is hard to ignite, almost always requires a magnum primer, even in 30 Carbine. The range of loads from lightest to heaviest is quite small. Even in the Hodgdon manual, they give very reduced load ranges. It works best at high pressure and in near full cases.

Personally, I wouldn't use it in a 45-70 unless I found a published load for it. I would think you would have better luck replacing 2400 with Lil-Gun.

At the very least, if you are going to try H110 in the 45-70, give Hodgdon's a call.

Badgerrr, if your looking for a new pistol powder, then I might suggest that you look into the surplus powders. WC820 is a wonderful pistol powder and is $8 a lb. I don't think that I'd try H110 in the 45-70. You could probably do it if you used a filler to keep the powder compressed in the base of the case.
For the 357mag, I've found that Bluedot is a great powder.
I'm going to the range tomorrow to try WC820 with 180's in the 357 revolver and rifle though. I'm trying it in the 357max Seville also.

I plugged H-110 in Quickload for the 45-70.
I don't think that I would trust this though.
405 cast 22" bbl.
30gn H110 1455fps @ 18ksi 54% load density
40gn H110 1830fps @ 36ksi 73% load density
45gn H110 2000fps @ 49ksi 80% load density
Again not load data, just a simulation.

If you do try it, I would definatley start low and work your way up paying close attention to velocity and useing it as a rough guestimate of pressure. A filler on top of the powder would probably help.

There is nothing wrong with haveing several different powders on the shelf though.
