My first comment, based on my own .450 Ackley, is to stay completely the Hell away from any loads proposed in P.O. Ackley's books. I know that at one time he suggested as much as 90 grains of 3031 under a 500 grain jacketed bullet. Well, that didn't blow up my gun, but it would completely destroy brass primer pockets for reloading, on the very first shot! Eighty grains of 3031 didn't destroy the primer pockets on the first firing, but brass life was still gone in about three reloads after the intial fire-forming. For 500 grain slugs I finally settled on a regular almost .458 Winchester load of 70 grains of 3031. I didn't use 350 grain bullets in my .450 Ackley, beause that is a bullet I felt was more suited for a .45-70 hot jacketed load, or best of all, for a ".458 American" (.458x2" belted mag). Anyway, good luck, it is a fine cartridge for heavy .45 bullets. | |||
