I read about some people - on this board and others - using Bullseye powder and tissue paper to form cases to their chamber. I have a Remington 700 VLS .308 and will be using: new Lapua brass CCI BR2 primers Varget Sierra MatchKing 168 gr Redding Competition neck and seating dies Any reason to do this in my case? Or should I just load what I have and go? I have uabout 100 rounds through my rifle, so the barrel should be broken in. I was looking to get the best accuracy I can - I understand this is a factory barrel so I am somewhat limited - but thought about giving this forming technique a try. Thoughts?

Your brass will fire form with your work up loads just fine. Fire forming as a seperate operation is usually done to form cases for non std chambers such as the "improved " or other wildcats. ------------------------------------ The trouble with the Internet is that it's replacing masturbation as a leisure activity. ~Patrick Murray "Why shouldn`t truth be stranger then fiction? Halvey, When I set up to work up loads for accuracy, I use the following procedure: 1-Fireform 100 rds. of brass w/ min. powder charge and inexpensive bullets. 2-Deprime w/ universal decapping die. 3-Trim to length and tumble. 4-Seperate 50 rds. by weight to within .5 grs. 5-Neck size and prime. I take those cases, the bullets of choice and my portable loading outfit to the range and work up the load on site. The next time I use those cases for the same load, the only step I eliminate is #1. I record all my data, so I don't have to take my portable outfit to the range the next time. If you can't have fun when you go out, STAY HOME !

quote:Hey Halvey, I've watched a few folks do that and it seemed to make a heck of a mess on the Range. Don't know what kind of residue is left in the barrel, but any old Powder Solvent "should" take it out. As for me, I "Jam the Lands" with a bullet and use starting Loads shown in a Manual to Fire Form my cases. I don't really see it as much of a hinderance as some folks do because once I get on-target, I switch over to Off-Hand practice. This allows me to focus on Shooting Form and do the Fire Forming at the same time. quote:If your VLS has the 26" Blue Bull Barrel and has the Laminated stock, I had one exactly like it. Absolutely outstanding accuracy for a straight off the shelf factory rifle. When I was Fire Forming, I used some 165gr Rem PSPs that are relatively inexpensive in bulk. They shot well under 1", and the 168gr Sierra MatchKings shot great as usual. I've not tried Varget with the 165-168gr bullets, but have used a lot of it with the various 150gr bullets. I've used H380 for so long that my hand just naturally goes to it when loading the 308Win and the 165-168gr bullets. quote:I'd say it depends on how well your chamber and Dies match up. You might do just fine without Fire Forming. I've messed with a bit over 2 dozen(mine and other folks) of the "V Series" Remingtons and every one of them has/had a SAAMI Minimum chamber. That will work in your favor if you still choose not to Fire Form. Don't forget Partial-Full Length Resizing(P-FLR) as one method that might help reduce the groups a bit. But, if Neck Sizing works the best for you, by all means use it.

Know reason to do that!!! That Process is just for forming brass to wildcat chambers. Your just spinning your wheels by this process. Just reload the brass you have they will form to your chamber the way it is. vangunsmith

You are starting with some of the best brass in a standard caliber. I would consider fire forming to be a total waste of time! I use Lapua brass in my 6mm Br and never do anything other than load normally and the results are great, at least the prairie dogs think so. RELOAD - ITS FUN!
