Just a couple of real simple questions to help me understand the terminology. What exactly is runout? How do you check for it? How far off the shoulder should a person begin neck sizing when using a FL sizing die? On the small calibers (.204's and various .22 calibers), how far from the lands should a person begin with bullet seating and when should you stop? If anyone else has questions that are pretty basic, feel free to post them here. Maybe this thread will become useful to some of us. Thanks in advance for your help.

Run out generally refers to the variance in concentricity of the bullet after it is seated. It is measured with a dial type indicator that generally rides over a "table" where the cartridge can be rotated. As the case is rotated the pin that rides on the bullet follows the circumference of the bullet. The run out, I believe, is the difference between the low point and the high point divided by two. Unless you chamber, action, bolt are perfectly square, who cares? The minute you fire the case, it will fire form to the rifle. This is the reason target shooters aways try to insert the round into the rifle the same way. You want enough enlarged neck to recenter the cartridge, but not so much that it makes it hard to chamber. I'd seat it out about five thousandths and move out to ten thousands in 1 thousandth increments. If you don't find a sweet spot, move in from five thousandths to 0. None of us, or at least few of us, are professionl reloaders. Some have just reloaded more. Kudude
