Trying to get ready for Africa 2004. Using TBBC's in my 300 mag and wifes 06. Accuracy not that great yet, not consistantly anyway. With the occasional flyer at always seems to be preceded by a stiffer than usual bolt closing, is it possible that this is causing the flyers? cases always at or below max lenght. Dies are set just off the shell holder doesnt look like I am working the body, do I need to be? Thanks Dulcinea

You can set up your full-length sizing die to just "bump" the shoulder back about 2/1000". StoneyPoint makes a comparator that will allow you to measure this. Bascially you take a fired case and measure it's length to a certain spot on the shoulder and then adjust your dies to move this point back 2/1000". It isn't hard to do but you will need a good set of calipers and the comparator...Stoney Point makes a lot of good equipment for setting bullet depth etc.

Dulcinea, I alway full size when makeing up hunting loads to insure easy chambering and extraction. This would be even more desirable for ammo going tho a hot climate such as Africa. I`m not sure if this has any bearing on your flier problem and IMHO doubt it. I never had much luck with some of the "premium" bullets as far as accuracy goes but they always gave more than enough for my hunting. Maybe you`re loading just a bit close to the edge and dropping a gr may take care of the accuracy, or a primer change may do the trick. It`s a good idea to load a bit lite when working up a load for a hot climate, pressures can rise with the temps and you don`t need ammo trouble on a hunt like this. I`d full size and test my load on the hottest day you get this year just to be sure your load works. GOOD LUCK wish I was going..........

Dulcinea, the "stiff bolt closing" tells me that you have not sized the case enough. I'll assume that your loads are safe, and until now haven't given you trouble. You don't list any specifics, like # of reloads, or COL, but I would suggest a couple of things. First, I would F/L size all cases used for the hunt. This is a prime opportunity to "custom fit" the brass to your chamber. Do so by turning the die down in small increments (1/8 of a turn) until all chambering resistance is gone. Secondly, trim your cases back .010" from maximum. For the 30-06 the trim length should be 2.484". Once you have made the die adjustments and reloaded the cases, go to a safe place and chamber them (all of them) just to be sure the problem is gone. Best of luck in Africa packrat

What Packrat said, plus make sure you lube each case consistently, and with enough lube. The amount of lube does make a difference if it varies from case to case. FWIW, Dutch.
