Need some help for my 11 year old. Mike drew out on the Texas Parks and Wildlife youth only trophy hunt in South Texas. He has a New England handi rifle in 243 but it not the gun. It is too small for the deer there. I plan for him to hunt with my old 270 Remington bolt action cut down to fit. I pulled the bullets from some Remington 150 gr SP bullets and replaced them with Nosler 150 sbs and partitions. Set the gun to shoot 2.5 inches high at 100 yards. Gun holds a nice under an inch group. Question: Who has run these 150s across their chronograph? I have no idea what the vel is. I know that they are nearly as hot as my old custom loads. Thanks, Jim

First of all, don't worry about the velocity of your .270. If the gun shoots that well, and you son is up to the task, he should have no problem. Secondly, there is nothing wrong with a .243 for deer. I have used .243 and 6mm Remington on deer and antelope all over the USA since the 1960's and never had any problems with that caliber.

Recoil could be a problem for a hunter that young and the 243 with the right bullet will harvest any deer at any reasonable hunting range. Recoil will be much less and reduce the chance he will wound or miss the animal. Limit your shots to under 200 yards and the hunt should come together fine. I don't believe children that age should be shooting heavy recoil rifles above the 257 Roberts. Each to his own, I have seen children as young as 8 years old hunting with an adult using a high powered rifle and in my view that is to young. Any hunter younger than 16 is not mature enough to be out in the field using a center fire rifle. The only person feeding off that high is the parent of the child not kid. He has not reached the age of sound reasoning to get the full impact of the hunting experience. The only reason he is out in the field hunting is pressure from the parent so that parent can tell all his hunting cronies my kid killed his first deer when he was 11. That kid don't give a hoot about shooting a game animal at that age. Let him grow out of his child stage then see if he cares to hunt. Some parents pressure their kids into situations they are not prepared to handle at an early age.

Jim, I'll suggest this for ya, as I have a family full of recoil people... take the 270, use 130 gr core locks (this is a SOFT BULLET) and load it down to 2700fps. this should feel just a hair warmer than the 243. You can then load up as he gains confidence. jeffe

There is nothing wrong with the 243 for deer. When I was a young hunter I killed several of our canadian deer which are much larger in size than texas deer.My father used the 243for many years for all his deer hunting. Why do scotsmen wear kilts?Because sheep can hear zippers.

I appreciate the suggestions but will probably go with a 7mm-08 for the boy. He will have to shot my 270 on the hunt. The 20 inch 243 is just too light for a quick shot or one rattled in and a not perfect shot. We are hunting live in the brush not over blinds and feeders. This is down and dirty in the South Texas Brush country. Has anyone fired a 150 gr Remington bullet across there Chronograph and know what the vel was? Mine broke several years ago and being out of shooting I never replaced it. Thanks, Jim

My father, who's in his late 60's is using a .243 with Nosler Partitions and is tickled with it. He used an '06 for as long as I can remember, then switched a few years ago. His success has not been hindered. I'd like to echo the recommendation of the 130gr. in the 270. It's THE bullet for the .270 IMO. I purchased a .308 for my wife and she didn't like it! She wanted to take the .257 Roberts and has had no reason to question her descision. It matters most where the hole is, not what put it there!!!

Actually lighter bullets will reduce recoil since that is a concern of yours.
