I have searched the net high and low......and can only see short references to it. It's based on the .50BMG case necked to .458. any data appreciated.

PC, The information I have is this: COL: 5.039" Case length: 3.543" Base to shoulder: 3.007" Shoulder angle: 28 deg Case volume: 264 gr of water You are correct in that it is based off of the 50 BMG.

Scott thanks for that.......what speed with what bullets can this round get up to ?? My only concern with tis round is lack of high BC .458 cal bullets.

From what I can gather this round will do ~ 3100 fps with a 500gr VLD bullet from a 32" barrel.

Scott I thought it might perform a bit better than that as it does not seem you loose that much powder capacity...........by rights it should out do the .416 barret.

PC, It may in fact do far better than that. That was simply a quickie in QuickLoad with Hodgdon H50BMG. If an ideal powder could be found (not sure what it would be right now that would take some more calculations) I would expect that the 460 Steyr would perform at around 90% to 92% of a 50 BMG for any given sectional density. That would provide a muzzle velocity of around 3200 fps for a 500 gr pill (a bit hot according to Quickload with the H50BMG powder).

Sounds like an eminently PRACTICAL round, too......... "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

Yes it is..........but the limited choice of long range styled .458" bullets at THIS stage lessen it's appeal, more match bullets in .50 cal
