I will tell you what little bit I know: CCI made a 'hard' primer for military rifles, this had the anvil futher away from the top of the primer in an effort to reduce misfires. I think Saeed did a comparison of the various primers and found them all to be similar. Personally I use Fed for my magnum rifles and winchester for my std cartrdiges. Thisis because they are diferent colors and I can tell them apart. ------------------

Federal has a reputation of making the "hottest" large rifle magnum primer, and CCI has the same reputation for large pistol magnum primers. As for military primers, they all have a heavier cup designed with the intention of reducing slam-fires. Occasionally I have foudn that CCI-200 and Winchester WLR have cast some sort of magic spell on the right components (bullet, powder and case) that no other primer has been able to do. I generally start with Remington primers in all my loads. Have to have a base point to work from. And 90% of the time I achieve the accuracy I am looking for with Remington primers. However, a few years back, when there was a "shortage" of CCI, Remington and Winchester primers, I stocked-up on Federal. The Federal primers come in real handy in the BIG cases with LOTS of powder...

the only experience in different primers is in large pistol, both .45 acp and .45 colt. in both the federal primers were up to 6% faster velocity, with the same loads of same powder, loaded at the same time. in pistols that's an extra tenth or two of said powder, but in rifle it could make a larger difference. here fed. primers are 20-25% more expensive, and not worth it for small pistol loads. how can one find the study that was done? thanks, nate

Paladin, Well I feel the same way, fact is that at one time I had an article that reviewed different primers, and I can't find it to save my life. The only thing that I remember is that the article focused on two primers that were safer when using progressive reloading and CCI was one of them. So,when placing my next order it was CCI for all pistol and rifle needs . If I can't get anymore info than I have now I will probably be ordering an assortment . Thanks for your help. Dyno
