375 Whelen Improved
Does anyone have a 375 Whelen Improved, or any version of it like the Hawk? I want to build one but I want to know what velocities you get with a 250 or 270 grainer.
I build a lot of 376 Steyrs, but always wanted to try this.
For edification, the 375 was not really a Whelen development.
Others did it later and used his name.

I have a 375 Hawk/Scoville. I didn't like the short throat length, but a throater took care of that. I will dig out my data and get back to you.

Ok, if you have one, nothing further need be said.

I have the Handloader article by Dave Scoville.
He kept loads to original 30-06 pressure levels. 50,000 cup.,60,000 psi. Case head expansion of .001
The original loads were 2600 fps with a 270 grn and 2700 fps plus with the 250 grn.
I lengthened the throat and upped the pressure.
I gained a bit more doing so.
1 moose and a couple, three bears shot with the 260 grn Nosler partion at 2750 fps worked just fine.

Did the 375 Hawk/Scoville just become the better (than the 375 H&H) overall big game cartridge?
Your results match or better Nosler’s data on the H&H!

The 260 nosler has a very blunt profile. That and the web being right where the full dia section begins. That creates a pressure spike in the S/C and 375 H+H with the standard throat length when it doesnt have a run into the rifling. Much like the mono bullets that needs a running start. I throated my rifle out, because the Nosler shot and worked so well with it. It is set up just for that bullet, not that others wont work mind you.
The H&H would see an improvement with the nosler if the throat was altered. Not sure why Nosler didnt change the profile, but 50-70 fps increase I got, doesnt change how it kills. I just liked the looks of it seated out. The original throat only allowed for a 3.1" OAL.

I built a 375 x62 a 9,3x62 necked up, no other change and equeled the 35 H&H exactly. I liked it
but did an old friend, so I let him have it..Ive Never been much on wildcat toys..

While it's arguable that one could load an 375 x64 to near enough to 375hh (88gr h2o vs 95gr in the HH) at a moderate increase or let's just say higher pressure than the 375hh, the x62 is about 78gr h20

I am not riding you about your hot loads, I am telling you that perpetrating this MYTH is unsafe to newish reloaders - you can't do it, the physics aren't there

Thanks for the wakeup call Jeffee, I was comparing to my 2500 fps loads that I load my 375s since day 1 as the bullets perform better, on the advise of Doctori. The 375 can beat that by more than a 125 plus FPS. Apparently I was comparing mild loaded 375s to max 9,3x62, my bad but I listed no specific loads on the thread??
