5shot17mm-08 velocites in a short barrel
I have a new Rem model 7 with a 20" barrel and am loadind 150 grn Rem bullets. With RL 19 I am getting 2500 fps safely. That is with a max load. I have not tried any other powders yet, but wanted to see if I was in the ball park. To be honest I expected more as winchester factory ammo was doing 2650 with 140 bullets.

bfrshooterThose velocities are right in the ball park for each weight bullet with a max load. The 10 gr difference in bullet weight means more then you think. I would not try to get the 150 going as fast as the 140.

mikethebearI have a 20 inch barrell Winchester classic compact. I get about 2750 with remington green box 140 grain, and 2650 with Federal 140 grain partition. I did get 2400 with a notch less than max with H4350 and 175 grain hornaday spire points.

vapodogIt looks as if you might be a bit short on performance as I'd expect about 2,700 or so even with a 20" barrel. I'd try Varget, IMR or H-4350, IMR-4007 SSC, or even H-414.
What warning (pressure) sign did you incurr that lead you to believe you was at the max on pressure?

5shot1I picked up some H414 today and will work up some load with that, if that doesn't do it I may try either H4350 or Varget. I reached the max listed loads in all of my manuals, 49 grns being the highest listed load I found. I meassured case expansion and compared it to factory loads and everything seemed fine so I up the load one grn to 50 grns. Velocity went up to 2550, but the primers looked a little flat, and the case expansion went beyond what I was comfortable with, so I settled on 49 grns as max with my gun. Bolt lift and extraction were fine however.

DwightI have a Rem 700 20" barrel in 7mm08 and get 2840 fps with 140 TSXs and 44.5 gr of Varget.

bfrshooterVarget is a great powder. RL19 (Right there with 4831.) is kind of slow for the case. You will be able to get what you want by changing powder.
I was only looking at the RL19 info for you to show you were already at the top speed for it.

himmelrrMy 7mm-08 is a 20" Rem stainless. I get 2820fps with 139gr IBs using a max load of IMR4895. I tried RL19, and IMR4350 but just didn't get the velocities I wanted. I did get into the 2800s with 4895 and RL15. Keep trying combo, you'll find a good one.

5shot1I tried the H414 tonight. 46.5 grns gave me 2743, at least for one shot. After It was getting to dark to get any more readings. I will shoot a few more tomorrow with better light and see if I get the same readings. If that is the case I can live with those figures. If I can get the kind of accuracy I want I will be good to go, if not I will try the Varget, everyone speaks so highly of it I may try it anyway.

bfrshooterVarget is a surprising powder. I have a 10" MOA, 7BR pistol that I wanted to use the Hornady 120 gr SSP bullet out of. I could not do more then spray the 50 yd target. This gun will shoot into 3/8" at 100 yd's with heavy bullets.
I had some Varget and E mailed Hodgden for a load. They said it wouldn't work and they had no info.
I went to work and found a super accurate load with the bullet that just doesn't match the gun. It burns clean and the velocity is also up pretty high, just about matches all the other powders. I was very happy and it will be my deer load with the gun.

5shot1Well the H414 averaged 3 shots at 2710 fps using 46.6 grns. and 2680 with 46 grns. I will check the loads for accuracy this weekend and see what happens. I am still going to try the varget out though. Thanks everyone for you help and suggestions.

jeffeossothat's not REALLY a short barrel...
a REALLY short barrel is the savage striker... in 708, no brake.. 14", I had and loved it.. but it required a very stready rest... calling it a pistol is charitable.
the same vraet loads with 139s that I was getting 2850 with from a 22" rifle would go about 2600FPS
