All my fired cases have a bright ring above the rim. I have used the bent paper clip to determine if there is a bump inside the bright ring and there is. The rifle is a Krag that was given to my father while he was in Viet Nam in the late 50's. He sent it home to my grandfather who had a Herter's stock fitted to it along with a scope. Dad gave it to me when I went to college in 1969. I just started reloading for it as it is very accurate with medium powered loads. I don't believe in pushing it too hard. I use Lee Collet dies to load with and they have given me wonderful service. I noticed the bright rings on every round. What is the remedy?

Can I only shoot new ammo every time from now on? I figured that there is enough experience in this forum to get some good information. Thanks for taking the time to respond!

You have to take your new brass and expand the neck to a larger bore (8mm or 338) and then neck it back down it down to 30 cal at a length to better fit the chamber length. Fire-forming the brass will fit it to the chamber without stretching the case at its base.

If you oil a new cartridge it will push back, then expand forward. This avoids the thining ring. Then if you only size until the case chambers you can get many reloads.
One has to wonder how the Krag got to Nam, probably a good story there.
Take Care!

That Krag case has a big ol' rim.

You're not pushing the shoulder back with a collet die.

Have the headspace checked; it may be excessive for the brass you're using.

The bright ring might be a stretch ring if it is a little granular in appearance or it might be just a polished expansion ring. Yes you might feel a bump either way. Take several of your worst offenders and cut them off about .5 inch above the head with a hacksaw and look at the offending area inside with a light. Then split the head top to bottom and examine that. If the case is thinner then they all should be scrapped and you should start over with new brass.

There are several ways to avoid this or at least slow it way down.

for the first loading

1. Use a min load with the front half of the case lightly oiled
2. Seat the bullet so it is jammed into the lands when loaded into the rifle.
3. Some people expand the case to form a false shoulder and have the false shoulder set the headspace.
4. You might try wrapping something around the case head in front of the rim to set the headspace. Fine copper wire such as magnet wire comes to mind.
