Im in need of a soluntion to a problem with the media I use in my vibrating brass cleanor. The media I use is Lyman green corn cob. Its brand new. I have been using it to clean my handgun brass only.

The problem Im getting is the brass is coming out covered in a powder like substence that is undoubtedly the green left over polishing compound. Is this normal? It has been almost 10yrs since I used my Lyman 1200 vibrating cleanor to clean brass, but I most definately do not recall the brass comming out like this requiering me to litteraly wash it to remove the left over polishing compound.

Any ideas or suggestions to solve my problem, or is this just normal?

Thanks,
Arthur.

How old is the media? If not old then I would recommend trying a diffent media. I have used plain corn cob media and corn cob and crushed walnut hulls mixed and both worked great. Also, the Nu-Finish liquid car polish in the orange bottle, which contains no ammonia, works great for brightening brass cases and leaves no residue and is way cheaper than brass case polish.

I had the same kind of problem with lyman media. It was just plain dirty even when new.
The "shaker" container was perfect for sprinkling onto my lawn....problem was solved.

I buy the generic corn cob or walnut stuff from people like midway. I have used flitz and I have used midway poish additives to improve the cleaning action of the media. Both worked good but as the media got a bit dirtier the flitz seemed like it was leaving a dirty dust on the casings. Some people use car polish like reported above with good luck.

May I make a suggestion Walnut shell is better than Cob media IMO !.

Yes I do and have used both , no longer though . It's the 21 St. century so take a peak .

Below is quick link , there are several other types brands as well as suppliers .

I use a combination of ceramic and synthetic by volume 1/8 ceramic 7/8 synthetics .

I prefer Tetrahedron and triangles shapes . I've had them for near 15 years and have yet to

change the media . Once in a Blue Moon I may put a cap full of polish say Dillon or in the mix .

I have washed the media a few times . I pour it into a clean bucket add Borax and Dawn dish

soap just a little let it soak 10 minutes swirl it around , dump off the dirty water rinse

with clean water swirl it around , dump rinse . Then dump the media on a screen place it in the

shade let it dry shake it around a couple of times Dry thoroughly . Back too the Vibra Hopper .

It sounds like your media is dry and grinding dust off itself. Try adding some non ammonia car polishing compound.

Go to petco or petsmart and buy some lizard litter, which is crushed ground walnut shells. It puts a nice polish on brass and tools. its cheap there also. 15 quarts for ten bux I think.

33806Whelen,can I safely add Nu-finish car wax to the Lizard litter, as i have a case of it in my garrage and it should help in cleaning and polishing my brass.

Thanks, Art,

Doc, thanks for the suggestion and link, but I was unable to find any info on cost of the media at the website.
