I use 2520 for loads from my .204 Ruger to 35 Whelen and have good results with it. But I have to admit it is the most messy powder I have ever worked with. The little granuals seems to get everywhere over my bench.

For more than a decade highpower competitors (when the .308 was absolute King at Camp Perry) didn't even bother to call it by its numbers 2520...they just called it "Perry Powder". (It was a VERY widely used powder for competition in the .308 because it performed so well accuracy-wise in that case with the 168 gr. match bullets.)

Well if it used to be called "Perry powder," then what, if anything, has taken its place?

OR is 2520 still the top powder for the 308 and 168 gr bullet?

I would like to know b/c I just recently got my 308 Sako back.

Well these days, Varget, RE15 or Vit N140 are all very popular. Personally I like the RE 15 and have been told that the military long range shooters use it, but never know about such rumors. Varget is very forgiving temp. sensitivity wise and it works well also. Truth of the matter, AA2520 still works as well as it ever did w/ the 168's, but that is not the preferred bullet for targets past the 600 line. RE15 and 175's are kind of like eggs and bacon if you will. Sure others have preference in powders??

175 gr.bullets ARE popular now, but the extra 7 grains of weight is not going to make 2520 a poor powder choice. Though I mentioned the 2520's use with 168 gr. match bullets, it was also the common choice for practice with 172-173 gr. GI bullets. There is no reason it shouldn't work well with bullets only 2 grains heavier than those GI slugs.

It absolutely amazes me the way what someone else uses messes with the heads of many competitive shooters. The more rounds a person puts down range under conditions approxinating those of a match, the better he will usually do at the real thing was/is my observation. I feel that is certainly more important to his ability than his choice of powders (within reason).

What someone else feels is the "best" powder is usually a matter of preference anyway, not "scientifically-proved" fact.

At any rate, if it was my personal choice, I would pick a good $10 per pound powder over a good $15 per pound powder every time for practice and local matches. It would enable me to do more shooting and get more experience for the same money. I could always switch to something else for Perry, if I absolutely felt I needed the extra help.

Nice thing about being adults is we all get to (have to?) choose our own poisons.

Good luck to you all in both shooting and life.
