I would like some input on your experience with 85 gr barnes triple shock bullet. What powder (s) worked best. Anyone have the barnes manual? what does it say?

Thanks in advance.

Big Grin

For 85 grain bullets in the .243 Winchester, either Speer, Sierra, Nosler or Barnes, I have had my best combined accuracy & velocity results with:

1. VV N-560
2. H or IMR-4831
3. H or IMR-4350

Again, that's just my experience I'm sure there's others just as good as there has been alot of favorable comments on H-414 and the Reloader powders too.

Cheers,

4350 is probably the classic powder, but I've had good results with H380 and H414 too

From the pdf files off the internet at the Barnes site:
Barnes 85-grain XBT non-coated
XMR3100(start-40.0gr)-(max-44.0gr)
IMR4320(start-32.0gr)-(max-36.0gr)
Win760(start-38.5gr)-(max-42.5gr)

I have had good luck with Varget powder, although I am using Berger bullets.

H 414, W 760 ( same powder) and RL 19 will give excellent results...

people always overlook the Un Trendy mid range burn rates of IMR 4064 and IMR 4895, with RL 15 and W 748.... however the accuracy results are there...

For straight accuracy 22.5 grains of Blue Dot....works quite well....

cheers

I've been having better luck with Varget than H4350 with the TSX. My M70 and especially my son-in-laws Tikka shoot very well with it. One of these days we'll set up the chrono to see how fast it's running.

Ditto.......

I'm getting 3180 fps with 45.5 grains of H4350 and 3 shots groups right at an inch with my BAR. First two shot are much tigher.

I tried the H4350 with the 85, 95, and 100 grain bullets. I never got anything to group using this powder, which happens to be one of my favorites.

No joy with Varget or VV.

I had ok results with IMR 4350 and 4831.

Then I tried Re19 and 22. This is what the rifle was needing. Tight 1/2 to 3/4" groups at 100 yards using a bipod with the 85 TSX.

FWIW, I did clean the bore before using another powder.
