Hi Guys, I’m developing a new load for my .338WM. I was given a few 225gr TXS’s and want to load them as close to 2800ft/s as possible. Local powder, S365 (approx. IMR 4530 or REL19), FED215 primers was my thoughts, or would you go slightly slower burning? What velocity could I expect? 24” barrel. Cheers Johan

My 338 load with 225 TSX is 74 gr. R-19. I have used 4350 and 4831 but R-19 got me over 2800 fps with good accuracy.

The Barnes Manual suggests IMR 4350 with the 225 grain TSX. If you don't have a manual, just check the Barnes web site. PM me if you need more help. I have a 22" barreled .338 Win Mag that shoots 225 Grain Sierra's into tiny groups with IMR 4350 and my load goes 2815 average fps. My load is 70.5 grains of 4350. Please work up to it, safe in my rifle all that stuff. Hope this helps, good luck with yours.

My 24" barreled 338 Win. gets an average velocity of 2830 fps with H-4831 and the 225 Gr. Nosler Partition. That combination has proven to be deadly on plains game up to and including Eland. Tom Z NRA Life Member

Both mine like IMR4350 with 225 grain TTSXs but I'm pushin em just over 2700 fps. H4831 gave me good accuracy but a little less velocity with a heavily compressed load so I'm stickin with IMR4350. H4350 is said to be more temperature stable but neither of my rifles liked it. I used CCI250 primers for many years and recently switched to Fed 215Ms. (GM215M match grade magnum primers) I wish we could buy the same powder used in the 225 grain TTSX Barnes VOR-TX ammo. It's very accurate in my primary rifle and clocks just over 2800 fps. I pulled a bullet and weighed the powder charge. It was 69.4 grains of some kind of ball powder. Whatever it is it works well.

I agree... that Vor-TX ammo is absolutely great stuff. Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.

Thanks for the advice guys; I’ve loaded for testing starting at 62gr S365 (similar to IMR 4530) up to 68.2gr for now. I’m hoping to get to the range this weekend to see what they do. Will keep you posted! Cheers Johan
