It is certainly possible to load smokeless powder in this cartridge but the use of a filler isn't a bad idea since it is unlikely you will find a powder that will begin to fill up all that space and still produce reasonable pressures for the Sharps. I have made up 45x2 7/8 rifles on Ruger No1s and was able to load these heavy enough to fill up the space but wouldn't recommend these loads for the Sharps. Ken waters was loading around 65 of 3031 in this case for use in a rolling block. I don't recall whether or not he used any kind of filler. For loads like this I have used a square of toilet paper and it seems fine. Regards, Bill.

Cowboy, hate to steer you to a different site but you might want to check out Shooters.com , the blackpowder cartridge page. Thats where I'm collecting info for my 45-120 when it gets back from the smith. These guys are serious steel and 1000yd shooters with these beasts and the advice is sound. Your on the best sight right now but head there to be save and keep that expensive rifle in one piece....Bob
