I need help finding a load for 150 or 165 or 168 grain bullet. I have never loaded 30-06 bullets for a 20 inch barrel. I would appreciate advice from someone who has loaded for the Savage Sierra 110 with the 20 inch barrel. Thanks in advance!

A load that works well for me for deer-sized game is 58.0grs of Imr-4350 and a 165 Ballistic tip. The lower group in this set is a Colt Light Rifle 30-06 shooting this load at 200yds....

The 165 gr Ballistic tips expand very quickly so I would choose a heavier constructed bullet such as a Barnes TSX, Nosler Partition or so on if I were to be hunting Elk or very large deer. I tend towards the 165-168gr bullets in the 308 & 30-06 because I've shot thousands of them in competition and am much more familiar with their trajectory. I think at longer ranges (that you probably won't use hunting) the 165-168's are more efficient than the 150's. For 180gr bullets I have had excellent results with IMR-4831 and RL-22. Good luck, let us know how you do..........DJ

AAdams,

I also have had great luck with the IMR4350 for the 165grn bullets in 30-06. And with the 150grn bullets, but, you might want to try IMR4064 or Varget or VN550 with the 150's too. BM

Adams,

I have had good luck in a Savage 110 30-06 w/ 49 grns of H4895 and HDY 150 SSTs. Shoots close to an inch at 100 and will put a nice size hole in a WhiteTail.

I really tried the load out on a 20 yard Broad-side shot this past season. The WT deer weighed about 160 and exit wound was around 1.5" right behind the shoulder. Some people doubt the penetration of the SST at close range, I have never had that problem.

I loaded up some 165 grn SSTs last week w/ R19, H4831, and IMR 4350. I intend on shooting this friday. I will let you know how I come out. If the SSTs don't shoot well, I am going to try some 165 Hot-Cores.

The 180 grn HDY SPIL have worked well w/ H 380 in a buddies Model 700. He seems to like the 180s I loaded for him but, the same SST 150 load mentioned above that shoots good in my Savage, will not shoot worth a darn in his rifle.

Every rifle likes its own loads. Thats the fun part of this wonderful hobby.

Good Luck!

Savage 110's tend to be rather light in weight and mine is blessed with one of thus unyielding plastic butt plates. To reduce recoil I came up with 50.5 gr of Imr 4064 in R-P cases F-210 primers at 3.310. Accuracy is MOA, velocity about 2856 fps in 22" barrel. Recoil is moderate, which is what I wanted. Used 150 Sierra Spitzer.
