I was looking at a 140 grain youth load with 36 grains of H4895. What would be a similar powder? I have IMR 4350, 4064, and RL 15 on hand. Thanks.

A 36.0gr loading in the 7x57 is quite reduced and while H4895 is recognised as a very suitable powder for reduced loads in a good range of cartridges, the equivalent burn rate of IMR4895 doesn't signal that the IMR powder is also suitable for reduced loads. Similarly IMR4064 which is slightly slower burning than H4895 is not necessarily as suitable for reduced loads. IMR4350 is a slower powder, and while I have used the equivalent H4350 in reduced loads for cast bullets in my 404 Jeffery this powder doesn't normally come recommended for reduced loads. Other way to reduce recoil for youth loads is to use a lighter bullet. A 120gr bullet loaded a little lighter in the 7x57 would be an easier and effective load.

I’ve always been loading my 7x57 for traditional full velocity loads. Of the ones you mentioned, I’d try the minimum recommended load for RL15 and see if it’s soft enough for your use. A 120 might also reduce things a bit. Of course my usual load is h4350 with a 175 at 2500 fps, and I feel it has no recoil. My feeling was I didn’t get as much velocity with RL15- so that’s why I am saying try it.

Hodgdon used to have a reduced recoil section for H4895 powder. Shoot Safe, Mike NRA Endowment Member

below 60% fill. 4064 will be fine if that's what you have. I actually prefer it in many cartridges at lowered powder amounts. 3031 will also work, and sometimes better than 4064 since it's a touch faster. stuff like H-322 doesn't reduce well unless you use a case filler. 4198 does.

I had a load for H4895 at 60% with a 120gr TSX. Recoil was like 10-11 lbs. Was lights out on deer. Perry

September's issue of Rifle magazine has an article about subloads down to 60% of max loads with H4895 (AR 2206H?). Hodgdon supports this practice and lists loads for the 7x57 in their accompanying table. They warn against trying this lurk with any other powder, however, including the IMR equivalent. I imagine something might be done with Trailboss, of course, but not reductions from the normal loads published.

The easiest way to get a 7x57 "youth load" is to go to the local sporting goods store and pick up a box of factory 7X57. Make sure it is not European ammo, it could actually be loaded to full potential. AK-47 The only Communist Idea that Liberals don't like.

I wouldn't recommend it. I had two hangfires using reduced loads in my 500 Jeffery using 91g of H4895. My full power load is 103g of H4895 and it works really well. Accurate 5744 is designed for reduced loads. I loaded 535g hard cast bullets to 1800 fps with 5744 and had zero issues. You can call them and they will email you recommended loads using 5744 for your application. any good cast bullet manual [IE not Lymans new version, NO.4] will have reduced powder loads in it.

Here is an interesting thread on setting up a 7x57 youth load. The author, Ben, is using cast bullets, but it may offer some insight on load development. https://www.artfulbullet.com/i...andson-trevor.10315/ Shoot Safe, Mike NRA Endowment Member

I used Hodgdon’s data for reduced 7mm-08 loads for my kids when they were young. Worked great on whitetail. Hunting: Exercising dominion over creation at 2800 fps.

41 grs of IMR 4320 gives over 2,600 fps and has proven to be quite mild and accurate in my rifles with the 139 gr Hornady SP.
