Mine goes from a .5 moa gun to a 1.5 moa gun after two shots. First two are almost always touching right on target next 3 are scattered around them. Very slim barrel though

Which brings me back to me original question this guys rifle is shooting the 1st shot 1 to 2 inches higher than his other shots. I might have to go with him and see what he is doing and see the groups for myself cause from what he is saying it doesn't sound like his rifle is grouping. I see what you are saying now I see the light I see the light As long as the the following shots are grouping with the first shot but not to such a degree were it looks like you shot your target with a shotgun.

I have one rifle that shoots the first shot out of a cold barrel different than the second (but the difference is dirty vs clean, not cold vs hot). All of my other ones shoot the first shot out of a clean barrel to the same point as the next several. The key is to run several patches thru the barrel until they come out dry. Accurate rifles show almost no difference between cold/clean shots and the next five. All of my custom barrel guns shoot the first shot as well as the second, third, etc. I agree with Kevin - in fact, I never zero from a bench. I zero with either a sitting position or a sitting with a bipod, both using a tight sling. I can hold my groups well under an MOA with either, so that is what I zero with. There isn't a competitive position shooter alive that zeros from the bench...
