I have no experience with this cartridge, however I found a load in the 10th Edition of Cartridges of the World, page 138: 370 gr lead bullet, 30.0 gr of IMR 4198 Gives 1400 fps and 1612 ftlbs energy. The comments are: Lyman No. 403171 Which I presume to be the mold number for the bullet? The notes for the cartridge say it is nearly identical to the 40-90 Ballard capacity wise. It also states you should be able to form brass from 444 Marlin brass, although it says it will be a little short. I'll post this in the single shot forum too. I have a Shiloh Sharps in .45-90, & I use AA-5744 powder for reduced loads in my rifle. If you contact Shiloh Sharps in Montana, they'll recommend a load using this powder. They frown on using just about any other smokeless powder in their rifles. In my .45-90, I'm getting velocities in the 1600fps range, with no pressure problems, & great accuracy. I LOVE my Shiloh Sharps; also, they have a website - www.shilohrifle.com. You can get load data there. ____________________________ .470 & 9.3X74R Chapuis' Tikka O/U 9.3X74R Searcy Classics 450/.400 3" & .577 C&H .375 2 1/2" Krieghoff .500 NE Member Dallas Safari Club | |||
