Rifle is a Remingtom Mod 722 in 222Rem with a 26 inch barrel.

What are some of the classic loads? I'm assuming a 50 grain bullet is the starting point. What primer and powders (and how much powder, if you'll share that info?) I'll still cross-check against my reloading manuals.

Thanks for your recommendations.

Remington #7 1/2 Primer
IMR 4198 The recommended loads are pretty mild.
I used up to 21.0 grains with 55 grain bullets but that is excessive compared to all the published data so I can't recommend it for you.
My M700 has a long jump to the leade but it is exceptionally accurate.

IMR data maxes out at 20.5 with the 50 grain bullet.

Do NOT use the Remington #6 1/2 primer. It is intended for .22 Hornet and .25-20 type loads.

23.0 IMR 3031, 53gr Sierra
20.3 IMR 4198, 53gr Detsch

The above were supposedly the "winning" loads at the 1962 NBRSA National matches.

I have an early 40X built on a 722 action, single shot, in 222. I have shot groups in the "ones" with the above loads.

Another one that's also very accurate in my rifle is a 52gr Berger under 24.3grs of BLC2.

I use 7 1/2 primers.

23.0 grains of IMR 3031 is for the win in my experience. IMR 4198 perhaps more consistant at short (under 200 yards) ranges.

Reloader 7 is another powder that was heavily used by bench resters due to its accuracy.

I use only Remington cases. Winchester cases hold considerably more powder and I didn't want to have to develop two loads.
My Savage likes Reloader 7 with CCI primers.

Just as a different option, I have had very good luck with VV N133 in a couple of my .222 Rems.

I use RWS brass, Federal 205 SR primers, and either 22.0 or 21.8 grs of N133 - depending on the rifle - both with 50-53 grs bullets.

Our very own "Gerry" uses VV N130 for his triple deuce, so that is another alternative.

About bullets: excellent, low cost accuracy can normally be found with either a Sierra 52 grs HPBTM (or the equivalent 53 grs HPM) or with a Hornady 50 grs VMax. Gerry uses Speer 50 grs TNTs for low cost accuracy.

My "classic" 222 Remington load is with Speer 70 grain Semi-Spitzers over a compressed charge of H414/Win. 760. You'll probably have to find a Speer reloading manual at least 20 years old to find data on this load.

20.5 gr. of RL 7, Rem 7 1/2 and 50gr. Sierra Blitz in about any case works for me. It's a mild load and extremely accurate!

Loads my Duces likes:

22.5 grains of Benchmark, 50 grain bullet, Fed 205M primers. (Many different 50 grain bullets shoot well)

21 grains of RL-7, same stuff as above.

The Classic: 19.6 grains of IMR-4198, other stuff the same.

Accuracy of above loads ranges from .187 to .250, all in Rem 722, 222 sporters (I have two of them)..

H335 (25 gr) and H4895 (23.5 gr) both perform well in my .222 Sako L461 with a Speer 50 gr. TNT bullet.

I have an older Sako L46 with peep sights that shoots tighter groups than I can see with 20.5 grains of H4198 and a Sierra 50 spitzer.

.

For a heavier bullet load that is classic
to many deuces I've loaded for.

63 grain Sierra semi-point
24 grains of H4895

I have killed many critters up to and
including many deer with this round.

R.,

Good luck with your Remington 722.

I prefer 50 gr. bullets in my .222 Rem. Currently both me & my Keppeler Heavy-Barreled Target Rifle are in love with Speer 50 gr. TNT's. I like the idea of a 1,000 in a Box (the bulk box), they are relatively inexpensive at that quantity and are fantastically accurate.

Having said that the vast majority of today's current crop of "tipped" bullets from Hornady (either V-Max's or A-Max's), Sierra & Nosler are a good way to see if your Remmie 722 is up to the task of small groups because; quite frankly I haven't found one yet that doesn't shoot very good and from 40 -55 grs., too.

At the other end of the price spectrum the Bulk bullets from Winchester, Remington and Midsouth have all shot very accurately, too.

I use 21.5 grs. of VV N130, CCI-400 primers with the 50 gr. TNT's at 2.18" in RWS brass and they group just like André's photo above Day-In, Day-Out.

H322, IMR or H-4198, H4895 & Norma 200 have all been outstanding powders for my .222 Rem. loads also.

Cheers,

What's the difference between the Remington 6 1/2 and the 7 1/2 primers? They're both small rifle primers I believe.

Actually the 7 1/2's are 7 1/2 BR. I've always thought that the BR stands for bench rest, others say magnum, although Remington makes no mention of them being so one way or the other.

I used to have a 722 in 222 and it loved Sierra 52 gn Matchkings over a max charge of Reloder 7, CCI sm rifle primer, and Remington cases.

I just stumbled on to those EXCELLENT Speer 50 grain TNT's last Summer, and all I can say is WOW. Those bullets fly right, in at least 6 rifles I have. I'd been a Sierra 52 grain bullet guy before the TNT's. But, not now. Also, the Speer 52 grain HP's and the HPBT's shoot just as well. Speer got those bullets RIGHT! I've never had one not shoot, with different powders too. Not one group I've shot measured over 1/2" for three shots at 100 yards, and many are around 3/8" for three shots.
